Bobcats' Junior Posts Second Two-Goal Game as Men's Ice Hockey Overcomes Two-Goal Deficit
HAMDEN, Conn. – Desi Burgart (North Vancouver, British Columbia) completed the Bobcats comeback bid Saturday night as he scored the game-winning goal with 2:31 remaining in overtime as the No. 12/13 Quinnipiac men's ice hockey team defeated #10/10 Clarkson, 4-3.
The Bobcats overcame a two-goal deficit in the third period for their first comeback win from two goals since defeat Union in overtime last season on Feb. 22.
Burgart got the comeback bid started in the third period just 25 seconds after Clarkson had retaken a two-goal lead. Marcus Chorney (Hastings, Minnesota) broke up a Clarkson pass and Michael Lombardi (Barrington, Rhode Island) slid it to Burgart in the neutral zone before he ripped a wrister past Clarkson goaltender Kris Oldham's blocker.
Just over three minutes after Burgart's goal, Ethan de Jong (North Vancouver, British Columbia) tied the game on his sixth power-play goal of the season thanks to some great passing from Smilanic. Odeen Tufto (Chaska, Minnesota) shot the puck off Smilanic's skate but he controlled the puck and fired a centering feed to de Jong at the top of the crease for the tap-in goal.
Burgart completed the comeback as Jayden Lee (North Vancouver, British Columbia) dropped off the puck for Burgart who carried it from his own blue line into the left faceoff circle and fired home the winner past Oldham's glove.
Lee scored the Bobcats first goal of the game in the second period that cut Clarkson's initial two-goal lead in half at 2-1.
Quinnipiac dominated Clarkson over the final 40-plus minutes of the game, outshooting them 36-15 from the second period on and held a 47-21 edge in shots overall.
Burgart's two-goal game was his second of the season and moved into a tie for the team-lead in goals. de Jong's tally was his sixth of the season, all on the power play, while Lee found the back of the net for the first time in 2020-21.
Burgart and Lee led the Bobcats with their two-point nights and nine different Bobcats recorded points in the win.
