Men's Ice Hockey Storms Back from Three-Goal First Period Deficit
HAMDEN, Conn. – The No. 12/13 Quinnipiac men's ice hockey team came back from a three-goal first period deficit to force overtime Friday night but fell to the No. 10/10 Clarkson Golden Knights, 5-4.
Odeen Tufto (Chaska, Minnesota) led the Bobcats with three points on a trio of assists for his seventh straight game with a point while four different Bobcats scored goals in the tough loss.
Ty Smilanic (Denver, Colorado) scored his seventh goal of the season while Peter DiLiberatore (Bedford, Nova Scotia) and Logan Britt (Crystal Lake, Illinois) each scored for the second time this season. Christophe Fillion (Sherbrooke, Quebec) found the back of the net for the first time in his collegiate career.
Quinnipiac got off to a challenging start as Clarkson led 3-0 less than eight minutes in the third period before DiLiberatore got the Bobcats on the board with a late power-play goal and trail by two going into the second period.
The Bobcats continued to answer just 37 seconds into the second period as Smilanic banged home a power-play goal on the backdoor pull within a goal of the Golden Knights.
After Clarkson regained a two-goal lead, the Bobcats scored two unanswered to tie the game and force overtime. Fillion fired home a feed from Desi Burgart (North Vancouver, British Columbia) off a turnover for the first goal of his career.
Trailing 4-3 with less than seven minutes to go in the third period, the Bobcats put an extra skater on the ice with a delayed penalty on Clarkson. After working the puck around the zone, Tufto fired a shot that was saved by Clarkson goaltender Ethan Haider but Britt was waiting on the backdoor to tap home the game-tying goal.
The Golden Knights won it with 1:19 left in overtime as Zach Tsekos put home a rebound.

- (3:14, 1st period) – Quinnipiac 0, Clarkson 1: Luke Mobley scored the first goal of the game just 3:14 into regulation as the Golden Knights led a rush into the offensive zone and Grant Cooper's initial shot was saved by Keith Petruzzelli (Wilbraham, Massachusetts) but Mobley was right on the doorstep to flip home the goal
- (4:04, 1st period) – Quinnipiac 0, Clarkson 2: Jack Jacome doubled the Golden Knights lead less than a minute later as he intercepted the puck in the right corner and skated around to the circle and fired the puck low past Petruzzelli.
- (7:34, 1st period) – Quinnipiac 0, Clarkson 3: Nick Campoli gave Clarkson a 3-0 lead as he skated into the offensive zone, and off a feed from Nick Wicks, wristed a shot from above the left faceoff circle past Petruzzelli's glove.
- (17:16, 1st period – PP) – Quinnipiac 1, Clarkson 3: DiLiberatore got the Bobcats on the board with a power-play goal late in the third period. Tufto passed the puck from the point to DiLiberatore on the right wing where he faked a shot to beat a defender and wristed the puck home past Clarkson goaltender Ethan Haider's glove side.
- (00:37, 2nd period – PP) – Quinnipiac 2, Clarkson 3: The Bobcats scored their second power-play goal of the game as Tufto shifted the puck quick to Ethan de Jong (North Vancouver, British Columbia) low in the left circle. de Jong held the puck to draw the defense before backhanding the puck across the crease for Smilanic to one-time home on the backdoor.
- (11:01, 2nd period – PP) – Quinnipiac 2, Clarkson 4: Clarkson regained its two-goal lead just past the midway point of the second period as Jordan Power fired a shot on goal from the left point that was saved by Petruzzelli and Anthony Callin's initial rebound was also saved before he swiped home a second chance.
- (15:57, 2nd period) – Quinnipiac 3, Clarkson 4: Desi Burgart (North Vancouver, British Columbia) created a turnover in the offensive end, spun and found Fillion streaking down the left side of the zone where he wristed home a rocket glove side to beat Haider and pull back within a goal.
- (6:24, 3rd period – DP/EA) – Quinnipiac 4: Clarkson 4: Logan Britt tied the game with a delayed penalty, extra-attacker goal as Tufto fired a shot on net after a quick pass from Jayden Lee (North Vancouver, British Columbia) and Haider kicked the rebound right to Britt waiting on the backdoor for the one-timer to tie the game.
