HAMDEN, Conn. – The No. 6/6 Quinnipiac men's ice hockey team continues its four-game homestand this weekend as the Bobcats host the Dartmouth Big Green and Harvard Crimson in a pair of ECAC Hockey games at Frank Perrotti Jr. Arena.
Last Time Out
Quinnipiac picked up a point in league play this weekend despite falling in overtime to Colgate before tying Cornell. In Friday night's overtime loss to Colgate, the Bobcats jumped out to a 3-0 lead early in the first period before the Raiders fought back to force overtime and win. The Big Red fought back in similar fashion on Saturday, clawing back from a two-goal deficit.
Scouting Dartmouth
The Big Green come into the game 1-4-2 since the beginning of November with their lone win coming against Army West Point in the Ledyard Classic but falling to Providence in the championship. Dartmouth opened up the 2019 calendar at Bentley, skating to a 3-3 tie with the Falcons in overtime. Will Graber leads the Big Green with eight assists and 13 points while Drew O'Connor and Quin Foreman lead the team with seven goals. Junior goaltender Adrian Clark has been the primary starter for the Big Green, sporting a 5-5-2 record with a 2.78 GAA and .899 save percentage.
All-Time vs. Dartmouth
Quinnipiac is 20-10-2 all-time against the Big Green despite falling in this season's first matchup in Hanover. The Bobcats fell 5-1, with Chase Priskie scoring the lone goal. Quinnipiac's last win against Dartmouth came in Hanover on Jan. 7, 2017 as part of a season sweep of the Big Green.
Scouting Harvard
Harvard comes into the weekend with a three-game unbeaten streak and are 4-1-1 in its last six games. The Big Red opened the 2019 calendar year with a 3-2 overtime victory over Rensselaer to move to 3-3-2 in league play before skating to a 2-2 tie in overtime with Boston University on Tuesday night. Defenseman Adam Fox leads the Crimson with 21 points while freshman forward Casey Dornbach leads the team with 16 assist and is second with 19 points. Lewis Zerter-Gossage leads the team with 10 goals. Michael Lackey has started 12 of 13 games this season, going 6-3-3 with a 2.36 GAA and a .914 save percentage.
All-Time vs. Harvard
Quinnipiac evened up the all-time series in November with a 5-2 victory over Harvard, moving the all-time record to 14-14-5 in 33 meetings dating back to 2005-06. Quinnipiac is 4-0-1 in the last five games against Harvard.
National Polls
The Bobcats remained in the top 10 in the national polls this week for a fifth consecutive week despite the 0-1-1 weekend, falling to No. 6 in both national polls. Despite falling in the polls, the Bobcats did not lose many points and remain close to the top five teams in the nation. Quinnipiac also is ranked No. 5 in the updated Pairwise Rankings as of Thursday morning.
National Goaltender of the Month
Andrew Shortridge was named the Hockey Commissioner's Association (HCA) National Goaltender of the Month for December, as announced by the HCA on Monday. Shortridge did not allow a goal in the month of December, extending his shutout streak to 180:03 after back-to-back performances not allowing a goal. Shortridge is the fifth Quinnipiac player in program history to earn a national monthly award from the HCA, joining Sam Anas '17 (Nov. 2013), Michael Garteig '16 (Nov. 2016), Dan Clarke '12 (Nov. 2009) and Ben Nelson '08 (Feb. 2005).
Toewser's Laser
Devon Toews is off to a fantastic start in his NHL career, already scoring two goals for the New York Islanders, including an overtime game-winning goal for his first career goal against the Chicago Blackhawks on Jan. 3. In his first seven games, Toews has two goals and an assist for three points with a +7 plus/minus rating and an average time-on-ice of 17:40.
Trombone Shorty
Andrew Shortridge appeared in both games over the weekend for the Bobcats, coming in for a relief appearance of Keith Petruzzelli on Friday night before getting his eighth start of the season on Saturday. Before giving up the overtime game-winner vs. Colgate, his only goal allowed, Shortridge's shutout streak had reached 195:45 before Jeff Stewart scored with 2:11 left in overtime. Shortridge still leads the nation with a 0.97 GAA, .961 save percentage and is tied for the ECAC Hockey lead with three shutouts while his seven wins are third in the league.
Fortunate Son
Brandon Fortunato's impressive senior season continued this weekend with a three-assist night against the Raiders, his second game with three-plus assists and fifth multi-point effort. Fortunato is just one assist away from tying his career-high of 17 from his first two seasons at Boston University while his 18 points are just four from tying his career high of 22.
Top Offensive Defense
Quinnipiac's defense continues to put up impressive numbers offensively, still leading the nation in nearly every offensive category with 26 goals, 57 assists, 83 points, 1.30 goals per game, 2.85 assists per game, 4.15 points per game, 11 power-play goals, 29 power-play assists and 40 power-play points, eight game-winning goals and 241 shots on goal. Quinnipiac defenders have eight more goals than the next closest defensive core and 25 more points than Ferris State and St. Cloud State in second with 58.
