HAMDEN, Conn. – The No. 12/13 Quinnipiac men's ice hockey team is set for its first regular season three-game series as the Bobcats host the No. 10/10 Clarkson Golden Knights beginning Friday night at 7 p.m.
Last Time Out
Quinnipiac had a successful weekend last time out as the Bobcats took two of three games against then-No. 10/10 Clarkson. The Bobcats could not complete a comeback and came up short in overtime Friday night, 5-4, before completing a successful comeback in a 4-3 overtime win Saturday night. Quinnipiac ended the weekend with an impressive 1-0 victory.
Scouting Colgate
The Raiders come into the weekend 2-3-3 overall with a 1-2-2 mark in league play after picking up a win at St. Lawrence and falling in a shootout last time out. Colgate also has an overtime win at Clarkson and defeated the Raiders in a shootout in the league's opening weekend. Alex Young leads the Raiders with seven points and is tied for the team with three goals, along with Matt Verboon and Paul McAvoy. Griffin Lunn leads the team with five assists and is second with six points. Goaltender Carter Gylander has seen the edge in goaltending time with a 2-2-2 record, 2.05 GAA and .921 save percentage in his first season with the team.
All-Time vs. Colgate
Quinnipiac comes into the weekend with a 24-17-2 in 43 matchups against the Colgate Raiders. The Bobcats have had the upper hand since the start of the 2014-15 season, boasting a 10-3-0 record in the last 13 meetings. Both teams won the home game in their matchups last season as Colgate won 3-1 in Hamilton and Quinnipiac won 2-1 in Hamden.
Players of the Week
The Bobcats recorded a couple weekly awards for the third time this season as Odeen Tufto picked up ECAC Hockey Player of the Week honors and Ty Smilanic won his first Rookie of the Week Award. Tufto led the league with five points while Smilanic had two goals and three assists.
National Rankings
Quinnipiac climbed back up in the national rankings once again as the Bobcats are No. 11 in both polls. The Bobcats went up one spot in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Poll and two spots in the USCHO.com Poll.
Going Streaking
Odeen Tufto has had one of the most impressive seasons in the nation as he takes a 10-game point streak into the weekend, the longest active point streak in the nation and second longest in general after North Dakota's Jordan Kawaguchi had an 11-game point streak snapped on Monday. Tufto's point streak is also the longest of his career, and longest by a Bobcat since Sam Anas '16 had a 16-game point streak from Dec. 12, 2015 through Feb. 26, 2016.
TufTo Beat
Tufto continues to lead the nation comfortably with 20 assists and 24 points thanks to recording points in 12 of 13 games this season. More than half of Tufto's points (13) have come on the power play as he has factored in 13 of 18 power-play goals.
Up the Record Books
Tufto also continues to climb up the record books at an impressive pace as he currently ranks fifth in program history and fourth in Division I program history with 110 assists. He is one assist shy of tying Todd Johnson '89 for fourth in program history with 111 assists. Tufto also has 145 points in his Bobcat career, as he pass Brandon Wong '10 and Matthew Peca '15 for sole possession of ninth in program history in points and fourth in Division I program history. Tufto is three points from tying Reid Cashman '07 for eighth in program history and third in Division I program history at 148.
Burgart King
Desi Burgart had a stellar weekend for the Bobcats as he tallied his second two-goal game of the season and his career Saturday for the Bobcats, and netted the game-winning goal in overtime to complete the comeback and win, 4-3. Burgart now has a career-high seven goals this season, one behind Ty Smilanic for second on the team and is tied for 11th in the nation.
All Smiles
Ty Smilanic recorded his team-leading eighth goal of the season with two goals on the weekend, including the winner in a 1-0 shutout of Clarkson Sunday. He is tied for third in the nation, and second among rookies. Smilanic has tallied goals in five of his last seven games, and points in six of his last seven, as he takes a three-game point streak into the weekend.
