HAMDEN, Conn. – The No. 16/14 Quinnipiac men's ice hockey team hits the road for the final time in the 2019-20 regular season as the Bobcats travel to the Capital City Region in New York to take on Rensselaer and Union this weekend.
Last Time Out
Quinnipiac hosted No. 5/7 Clarkson and St. Lawrence last weekend with the Bobcats coming away with a split as the Bobcats fell to Clarkson before dominating St. Lawrence, 6-1. The Bobcats battled hard against the Golden Knights, outshooting them 41-24, and came back from a 2-0 deficit but Clarkson came away with the win. Saturday night, the Bobcats scored five goals in the third period to come away with the win.
Scouting Rensselaer
The Engineers come into the weekend with a record just below .500 at 13-15-2 on the season and are tied for fifth in ECAC Hockey with 19 points and a 9-8-1 record. Rensselaer split last weekend with a 4-1 win over Colgate and a 4-2 loss at Cornell, and are 1-3-0 in their last four games. Chase Zieky leads the team with 13 assists and 20 points on the season while his three goals are tied for third on the team. Patrick Polino leads the team with nine goals while Todd Burgess is second with eight goals. Owen Savory has commanded the goal once again as he leads the team with a 2.38 GAA and .920 save percentage along with three shutouts in 20 starts. Rensselaer has struggled on the power play at 15.1 percent this season but has been solid on the penalty kill at 83.8 percent.
All-Time vs. Rensselaer
The Bobcats come into the weekend with an 18-7-9 record in 34 games with the Engineers dating back to 1999. Quinnipiac has won four straight matchups with Rensselaer and is 13-1-3 against the Engineers since the beginning of the 2011-12 season.
Scouting Union
Union has struggled this season to the tune of a 7-20-3 record and 5-12-1 mark in ECAC Hockey play. The Dutchmen have won just twice since the calendar turned to 2020 with wins over St. Lawrence and Dartmouth, posting a record of 2-7-2 in the last 11 games. Anthony Rinaldi has been one of the bright spots for Union with 20 points on the season while his five goals are tied with five other Dutchmen for the team lead. Darion Hanson has seen the bulk of the playing time in 2019-20 despite struggling with a 2.82 GAA and .904 save percentage. Union has also struggled on special teams this season at 11.8 percent on the power play and 78.6 percent on the penalty kill

Quinnipiac improved to 19-17-5 in 41 meetings with a 2-1 victory over Union on Nov. 15 for its first win against the Dutchmen since 2016. The Bobcats are looking this weekend for their first win in Schenectady since the 2014-15 season. when they beat the Dutchmen, 4-3, behind three power-play goals.
National Rankings
The Bobcats moved up one spot in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Poll to No. 14, its third straight week in that poll. Quinnipiac also remained in the USCHO.com Division I Men's Poll at No. 16 in the national rankings. The Bobcats have been ranked in the USCHO Poll for six consecutive weeks since Jan. 13.
Playoff Positioning
Quinnipiac heads into the weekend with a chance to clinch a first round bye in the ECAC Hockey Tournament. Quinnipiac currently has 24 points and sits in third place, one point ahead of Harvard. The Bobcats hold a five-point lead on Colgate and Rensselaer who are tied for fifth place, and Quinnipiac has its first chance to clinch a first round bye with a win over Rensselaer on Friday, a Colgate loss at Brown and a Yale loss to Cornell. If the Raiders or Bulldogs come away with wins on Friday, the Bobcats will need to sweep the weekend to clinch the bye.
Face/Off
Quinnipiac remains one of the top faceoff teams in the nation with a .557 faceoff percentage, good for second in the nation behind only Minnesota State (.558). The Bobcats had a stellar faceoff weekend against Clarkson and St. Lawrence for the boost back into second place. The Bobcats have three players ranked in the top 36 in the nation in faceoff percentage led by William Fällström in 15th at .595. Quinnipiac is the only team in the nation with three players ranked in the top 36 in faceoffs.
Odeen Oh My
Odeen Tufto continues to impress in his junior season as he recorded a three-point night against St. Lawrence for his 45th career multi-point game in 106 career games. He is tied for the ECAC Hockey lead with 29 assists while his 34 points are second to Harvard's Nick Abruzzese. In addition to his impressive season, Tufto is just three assists from tying his career-high of 32 from 2017-18. In his career, Tufto's 88 assists are tied with George Hines '88 for 12th in program history while his 117 points are tied with Hines for 24th all-time.
On the Verge of 40
Tufto also is on the verge of his third straight 40-point season where he would join Reid Cashman '07 as the only Bobcats with three-straight 40-point seasons in Division I program history. Tufto is currently one of eight players in Division I program history to record three straight 30-point seasons.
Whale Watch
Alex Whelan's hot streak continued over the weekend as he scored a pair of power-play goals to tied Wyatt Bongiovanni for the team-lead with 13 goals on the season, and four power-play tallies. Whelan has now recorded three straight seasons with 13-plus goals while his 48 career goals are tied with Matt Goodrich '99 and Shawn Mansoff '01 for 23rd in program history, and looks to become just the 21st player in program history with 50 goals.
Gotta Get Those Jerms
Nick Jermain also continues to impress as he buried his 11th goal of the season to keep pace for third on the team in 2019-20, and comes into the weekend with points in back-to-back games after picking up an assist on Ethan Leyh's power-play goal against the Golden Knights. Jermain now has 25 career goals.
