Petruzzelli Makes 21 Saves on 23 Shots as Bobcats Drop ECAC Hockey Contest
TROY, N.Y. – The No. 14/16 Quinnipiac men's ice hockey team gave up a pair of power-play goals Friday night as the Bobcats came up short at Rensselaer, 4-0, in ECAC Hockey play.
Rensselaer scored its first power-play goal of the game in the first period as Will Reilly wristed home the tally before the Engineers doubled their lead in the third period on a five-on-three power play as Reilly set up Todd Burgess for a one-timer. The Engineers added an empty-netter with 4:08 left in the third period before putting home one more goal in the final minute.
Quinnipiac outshot Rensselaer in the game, 37-25, and dominated with a 28-13 stretch over the final two periods but could not get a goal past Rensselaer netminder Owen Savory.
With the loss and a Harvard win at Clarkson, Quinnipiac moves into fourth place in the ECAC Hockey standings and maintain a three-point lead on Rensselaer for the final first-round bye.
Despite picking up the loss, Petruzzelli made 21 saves between the pipes for the Bobcats and has allowed two goals or fewer for the sixth time in his last seven starts.

- (16:31, 1st period – PP) – Quinnipiac 0, Rensselaer 1: Will Reilly broke the scoreless tie in the waning stages of the first period on RPI's second power play of the period as Shane Bear and Chase Zieky combined with passes across the blue line to get Reilly the puck where he faked a shot to get around a Quinnipiac defender before wristing the puck home.
- (13:00, 3rd period – PP) – Quinnipiac 0, Rensselaer 2: The Engineers doubled their lead on a five-on-three power play with seven minutes left in the third period as Todd Burgess one-timed a pass from Will Reilly just past Petruzzelli as he slid across the goal line.
- (15:52, 3rd period – EN) – Quinnipiac 0, Rensselaer 3: Jake Marrello put home an empty-net goal with 4:08 left in the third period as he collected the puck off Jake Johnson's attempt that was blocked and tapped home the puck past a diving Quinnipiac defender.
- (19:30.9, 3rd period) – Quinnipiac 0, Rensselaer 4: Ottoville Leppanen created a Quinnipiac turnover in the neutral zone and shifted the puck up to Mike Gornall whose initial shot was deflected and Tristan Ashbrook backhanded the rebound over the goal line to beat Evan Fear (Winnetka, Illinois) who replaced Petruzzelli late.
- Petruzzelli made 21 saves on the 23 shots that he faced.
- Petruzzelli has now allowed two goals or fewer in 21 of the Bobcats 31 games this season.
- Karlis Cukste (Riga, Latvia) led all skaters with six shots on goal while six Bobcats had at least four shots on goal Friday night.
- The Bobcats travel across the capital region to Schenectady, N.Y., where they will take on the Union Dutchmen with puck drop set for 7 p.m. at Messa Rink.
