Bobcats Come Back from Two-Goal Deficit Once Again but Can't Complete Comeback
HAMDEN, Conn. – The No. 15/15 Quinnipiac men's ice hockey team battled back from a two-goal deficit for the second straight game but No. 5/7 Clarkson scored the game-winning goal with 5:02 left in the second period as the Bobcats fell to the Golden Knights, 3-2.
Quinnipiac goaltender Keith Petruzzelli (Wilbraham, Massachusetts) shined for the Bobcats down the stretch as he made several key saves to keep the Bobcats within a goal but the Bobcats could not find the back of the net on the other end to tie the game once again in the third.
The Bobcats sustained pressure in the second and third periods as they attempted to overcome the Golden Knights, outshooting Clarkson 31-13 in the final two periods but only managed to tie the game early in the second.
After two goals in the first two minutes, including one that was added with a review 1:46 after it was originally scored, Clarkson held a 2-0 lead until Michael Lombardi (Barrington, Rhode Island) picked off a clear attempt and fired a shot under a leaping Zach Metsa (Delafield, Wisconsin) to pull the Bobcats back within a goal.
Early in the second period on the power play, Quinnipiac snapped Clarkson's streak of 19 straight penalties killed with a power-play goal from Ethan Leyh (Anmore, British Columbia) that snuck through Frank Marotte's five-hole.
The Golden Knights regained the lead late in the period as a shot deflected off a Quinnipiac stuck and fluttered over Petruzzelli into the net.
Petruzzelli finished the night with 21 saves as he stood on his head despite the three tough goals allowed. His finest stop of the night came on the Golden Knights' only power play of the game as he came across his goal line to deny a backdoor shot from Clarkson's Mathieu Gosselin and keep it a one-goal game.
