Men's Ice Hockey Falls in Non-Conference Action, 4-1, Despite Strong Goaltending
HAMDEN, Conn. – Keith Petruzzelli (Wilbraham, Massachusetts) made 35 saves between the pipes for the Bobcats in a stellar effort but the No. 11/11 Quinnipiac men's ice hockey team came up short Friday night against the No. 12/13 Bowling Green Falcons, 4-1, at Frank Perrotti Jr. Arena.
All night long, Petruzzelli made big saves for the Bobcats to keep the Falcons at bay and the game within striking distance.
He was tested early in the game, making 15 saves on 17 shots in the first period. Bowling Green converted on two of its three power plays in that period, including a fluky goal that deflected off a Quinnipiac skate that made it 2-0 in the waning seconds of the period.
Petruzzelli and the defense kept the Falcons off the board in the second period before Bowling Green scored an empty-net, short-handed goal with 7:11 remaining in the third period as the Bobcats attempted a comeback with an early six-on-four power play opportunity.
Just over a minute after Bowling Green had made it 3-0, Nick Bochen (North Vancouver, British Columbia) struck with a powerful one-timer from the left faceoff circle off a feed from Zach Metsa (Delafield, Wisconsin).
Bowling Green added another empty-net goal with 2:28 remaining in the third to finish off the scoring.

- (14:19, 1st period – PP) – Quinnipiac 0, Bowling Green 1: Alex Barber got the Falcons on the board late on the second power play of the game just after 4-on-4 play as Tim Theocharidis fired a shot on goal from the point but Barber redirected the shot past Petruzzelli to give Bowling Green the 1-0 lead.
- (19:29.3, 1st period – PP) – Quinnipiac 0, Bowling Green 2: The Falcons capitalized late in the first period for their second power play goal as Taylor Schneider collected a loose puck in the left corner and flung the puck on net where it deflected off a Quinnipiac defender past Petruzzelli for the tough-luck goal.
- (13:49, 3rd period – SH EN) – Quinnipiac 0, Bowling Green 3: Quinnipiac opted for a 6-on-4 power play opportunity to jumpstart a comeback just over the midway point of the third period but Connor Ford controlled a rebound and shifted the puck up in the defensive zone to Evan Dougherty who fired the puck nearly the length of the ice for the empty netter.
- (14:57, 3rd period) – Quinnipiac 1, Bowling Green 3: Nick Bochen blasted home his second goal of the season as he blasted home a one-timer just after the Bobcats power play expired to pull them back within two. Guus van Nes (Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht, Netherlands) pulled the puck out of the corner and hit Metsa with a pass at the left point. Metsa walked the puck along the blue line to create time and space for Bochen who rifled the one-timer past Bowling Green goaltender Zack Rose.
- (17:32, 3rd period – EN) – Quinnipiac 1, Bowling Green 4: The Falcons added another empty-netter with 2:28 to go in the third period as Carson Musser blocked a shot in front and the rebound went up to Cameron Wright who skated it into the neutral zone before passing the puck up to the blue line for Brandon Kruse to bury into the empty net.
