No. 11/11 Men's Ice Hockey Comes Up Short for Second Straight Night to Falcons
HAMDEN, Conn. – Desi Burgart (North Vancouver, British Columbia) and Ethan de Jong (North Vancouver, British Columbia) each netted a pair of goals Saturday night but the No. 11/11 Quinnipiac men's ice hockey team fell to the No. 12/13 Bowling Green Falcons, 4-2, at Frank Perrotti Jr. Arena.
The Bobcats jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of goals in the second period but the Falcons climbed all the way back thanks to three third period goals to pick up their eighth win of the season.
Keith Petruzzelli (Wilbraham, Massachusetts) was solid between the pipes once again as he made 32 saves, including 14 of 15 in the second period, to keep the Bobcats tied or on top for much of the game.
de Jong and Burgart each scored in the second period for their first tallies of the season. de Jong potted a power-play goal early in the second with a smooth spin move on top of the crease before roofing the puck while Burgart undressed a defender before roofing a forehand wrister to give the Bobcats the 2-0 lead with 10:24 to go in the second.

- (4:17, 2nd period – PP) – Quinnipiac 1, Bowling Green 0: de Jong got the Bobcats on the board first early in the second period with his first of the season. Zach Metsa (Delafield, Wisconsin) worked the puck to Odeen Tufto (Chaska, Minnesota) along the boards where he snapped a pass to de Jong on the doorstep. de Jong then spun on the doorstep and roofed the puck over Eric Dop's blocker for the goal.
- 9:36, 2nd period) – Quinnipiac 2, Bowling Green 0: Burgart picked off a pass in the neutral zone and carried the puck into the offensive zone where he went forehand-backhand with the puck through a defender's legs before making a few moves and roofing the puck forehand over Dop's blocker.
- (19:03.7, 2nd period – PP) – Quinnipiac 2, Bowling Green 1: The Falcons scored another power-play goal Saturday night to cut the Bobcats lead in half as Will Cullen one-timed a shot from Connor Ford that was saved by Petruzzelli and Gavin Gould was on the doorstep to put home the rebound.
- (13:58, 3rd period) – Quinnipiac 2, Bowling Green 2: Brandon Kruse chipped the puck in down low and Cameron Wright chased it down into the left corner. After a battle for the puck, Wright managed to play the puck into enough open space for Kruse to rifle a one-timer past Petruzzelli to tie the game.
- (18:12, 3rd period – PP) – Quinnipiac 2, Bowling Green 3: Five seconds after the Falcons went onto the power play, Connor Ford buried his first goal of the night with a goal that stood as the game-winner. Ford won the faceoff in the offensive zone and Gavin Gould chased it down along the boards. Gould skated below the end line and found a wide open Ford on the back door for the one-timer back to Petruzzelli's blocker side.
- (18:31, 3rd period – EN) – Quinnipiac 2, Bowling Green 4: Tim Theocharidis sealed the game 19 seconds later with an empty-net goal as Connor Ford won a faceoff and sent the puck backwards to Theocharidis where he fired the puck almost the length of the ice.
- de Jong found the back of the net for the first time this season with a power-play goal for the Bobcats early in the second period.
- The goal marked the 18th of his career and first since scoring vs. Brown on Feb. 28 in the penultimate game of the 2019-20 season.
- Burgart scored a highlight-reel goal for his first of the season and the fifth of his career.
- It was the first goal for Burgart since scoring at AIC on Oct. 12, 2019.
- Tufto recorded his fourth assist and fifth point of the season with the primary helper on de Jong's goal.
- He now has points in three of four games so far this season.
- Tufto now has 94 assists and 126 points in his Quinnipiac career, both tops among active NCAA Hockey players.
- Metsa's assist was his sixth of the season and seventh point as he maintains his team lead in both categories.
- He extended his point streak to five games dating back to the final game of the 2019-20 season as he has recorded points in all four games to open this season.
- Petruzzelli continues to shine between the pipes as he made another 32 saves Saturday night, the first time since his first two Quinnipiac games that he has had to make 30-plus saves in back-to-back games.
- He owns a .927 save percentage through four games after making 101 saves on 109 shots while posting a 2.06 GAA.
- The Bobcats have another quick turnaround before their next series with the Holy Cross Crusaders kicks off Tuesday evening with a 5 p.m. puck drop at Frank Perrotti Jr. Arena before hitting the road on Wednesday at 5 p.m. for the first road contest of the 2020-21 season.
