Whelan Scores Pair of Power-Play Goals, Metsa Adds Winner for Sixth Straight Win
CANTON, N.Y. – Alex Whelan (Ramsey, New Jersey) scored a pair of power-play goals in the second period and Zach Metsa (Delafield, Wisconsin) capped off the period with the game-winning goal as the Quinnipiac men's ice hockey team took down the St. Lawrence Saints, 3-2, Friday night to earn their sixth straight victory.
Quinnipiac has now recorded winning streaks of at least six games three times over the past two seasons as the Bobcats move into sole possession of third place in ECAC Hockey.
Whelan got the scoring started in the second period with his first power-play goal of the night before the Saints tallied a pair of goals within a minute of each other to take a 2-1 lead in the period.
Nearly five minutes after Whelan's first power-play goal, he struck again to tie the game before Metsa drilled home the game-winner with 2:33 to play in the second period.
Keith Petruzzelli (Wilbraham, Massachusetts) made 19 saves for the Bobcats as he earned his sixth straight win and 12th win overall on the season.

- (7:19, 2nd period - PP) – Quinnipiac 1, St. Lawrence 0: Whelan put the Bobcats on top with a power-play goal near the midway point of the season period as the Bobcats displayed some nice passing before Zach Metsa (Delafield, Wisconsin) found Guus van Nes (Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht, Netherlands) along the end line for a quick pass to Whelan for the one-timer.
- (9:22, 2nd period) – Quinnipiac 1, St. Lawrence 1: Ashton Fry quickly tied the game for the Saints just over two minutes after the Bobcats' power-play goal as he received an outlet pass and carried the puck into the offensive before banging his shot off the post.
- (10:20, 2nd period) – Quinnipiac 1, St. Lawrence 2: Bo Hanson carried the puck coast-to-coast less than 50 seconds later to give the Saints the lead and beat Petruzzelli with a wrister.
- (15:11, 2nd period – PP) – Quinnipiac 2, St. Lawrence 2: Whelan buried his second power-play goal of the game with 4:49 left in the second period as William Fällström (Stockholm, Sweden) found him with a pass down near the crease. Whelan spun to face the net and shoot but his shot deflected off a St. Lawrence defended and past St. Lawrence goaltender Daniel Mannella to tie the game.
- (17:27, 2nd period) – Quinnipiac 3, St. Lawrence 2: The Bobcats reclaimed the lead 2:26 after Whelan's second of the game as Odeen Tufto (Chaska, Minnesota) backhanded a pass from the right wing to Metsa at the left point where he rifled a shot that Mannella couldn't handle and the puck trickled over the goal line.
- Whelan recorded his first two-goal game of the 2019-20 season and the fourth multi-goal game of his career.
- Friday night also marked the first time that Whelan recorded multiple power-play goals in the same game.
- With his pair of goals, Whelan extended his point streak to six games
- Whelan also finished the game with 40 career goals, making him the 20th Bobcat to record 40 goals at the Division I level.
- Metsa tallied two points on a goal and an assist for his second multi-point game in the last four games and second in his career.
- He now has a career-high three goals while his 11 points are tied for second among Quinnipiac defensemen.
- Tufto extended his point streak to five games with an assist on Metsa's goal to give him 20 assists for a third straight season.
- He is the fifth different Bobcat to record at least 20 assists in at least three straight season at the Division I level joining Jamie Bates '08, Reid Cashman '07, Brian Herbert '03, and Chris Cerrella '01.
- DiLiberatore also extended his point streak to five games with an assist Friday night to give him 10 assists this season
- He is just the third ECAC Hockey defenseman to reach 10 assists this season and is now tied for second among the league's defensemen with 13 points.
- Fällström picked up his eighth helper of the season with an assist on Whelan's second power-play goal to give him points in back-to-back games
- Cukste continued his scoring touch as he recorded an assist for his ninth assist of the season and 11th point, tied with Metsa for second among the team's defensemen.
- van Nes recorded his third assist of the season and first point since Nov. 1 with the primary helper on Whelan's first power-play goal of the game.
- The Bobcats have scored two power-play goals in three consecutive games and now have a power-play goal in four of the last five.
- The Bobcats travel down Route 11 to Potsdam where they will wrap up the weekend at No. 7/8 Clarkson with puck drop set for 7 p.m. from Cheel Arena
