HAMDEN, Conn. – The No. 9/9 Quinnipiac men's ice hockey team opens up the final four-game stretch of the 2018 calendar year with a home-and-home series against the No. 19 Princeton Tigers, opening Friday night at 7 p.m. at home before traveling to Hobey Baker Rink in Princeton Saturday night at 7 p.m.
Last Time Out
Quinnipiac recorded a weekend sweep this past weekend as the Bobcats took down the Maine Black Bears in a pair of games, winning in the opener 7-2 before closing the weekend with a 2-0 shutout. The goaltending was stellar with Andrew Shortridge making 33 saves on Friday before Keith Petruzzelli made 23 saves in his third shutout of the season.
Scouting Princeton
The Tigers come into the weekend on a three-game losing streak after they were swept by Colgate and Cornell before Thanksgiving and a recently coming off a tough 3-2 overtime loss at No. 3 Massachusetts. Princeton opened the season 3-1-1 with wins over Union, Rensselaer and Dartmouth. Princeton is led offensively by Ryan Kuffner's seven goals and 14 points, including all seven goals and 13 points in league play. Max Veronneau leads the team with nine assists and 11 points while Alex Riche and Josh Teves each have eight points. Goaltender Ryan Ferland has started all eight games and sports a 3-4-1 record with a 2.69 GAA and .917 save percentage.
All-Time vs. Princeton
Quinnipiac owns the all-time series with Princeton, recording a 15-12-1 record. The Bobcats are 9-4-1 on the road at the Tigers and are 6-8 here in Hamden. Despite owning the all-time series, the Bobcats have lost three of the last four meetings between the two teams. Prior to this recent stretch, the Bobcats were 9-1-0 against the Tigers dating back to the 2011-12 season.
Into Single Digits
The Bobcats continued their ascent in the national polls as they reached the single digits as the No. 9 team in the nation in both the USCHO.com Division I Men's Poll as well as the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Men's College Hockey Poll. Quinnipiac is ranked in the single digits for the first time since the Dec. 5, 2016 polls when the Bobcats were No. 7 in the USCHO Poll and No. 8 in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Poll.
Seeking 500 Wins
Rand Pecknold continued in his journey for his 500th career victory after last weekend's sweep, moving up to 496 career wins. He looks to become just the second coach in Quinnipiac Athletics history to record 500 wins at Quinnipiac, as former men's and women's tennis coach Mike Quitko recorded 526 wins over 23 years with those programs. Former baseball coach Dan "Skip" Gooley recorded his 500th career win as a coach at Quinnipiac, but recorded 101 wins in a brief stint at Hartford before returning to Quinnipiac.

Rand Pecknold is looking to become the 26th coach in NCAA Ice Hockey history to record his 500th career victory and 17th at the Division I level. His 496 current victories are the third most among active head coaches, only trailing Boston College's Jerry York and Mercyhurst's Rick Gotkin.
Weekly Awards
The Bobcats continued their success in the league recognition as Odeen Tufto was named the ECAC Hockey Player of the Week for the second time in his career and Ethan de Jong earned his first career ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Week honors. The two combined for five goals and four assists for nine points on the week on the way to the weekend sweep.
Individual National Recognition
In addition to his league honors, Tufto was also rewarded as the NCAA Men's Ice Hockey Third Star of the Week after his impressive performance. He is Quinnipiac's first player to earn a star of the week this season.
Making a Name
Former Quinnipiac men's ice hockey captain Connor Clifton has certainly made an impact since making his NHL debut two weeks ago. Clifton has played in six games as of Wednesday, recording a +3 with four shots, 11 hits and five blocked shots. He has also an average time on ice of 17:32, with a season-high 24:36 in the most recent game at Toronto on Monday night.
Well Rounded Team
Quinnipiac is among the most well-rounded teams in NCAA Hockey this season as the Bobcats are sixth averaging 3.77 goals per game and fifth with 49 total goals while the defense is just as good. Quinnipiac is tied for fourth allowing 1.85 goals per game and fifth allowing just 23.15 shots on goal per game.
Defense Remains Hot
Not only is the Quinnipiac defense getting it done on the defensive side of the ice, but they have been a major part of the offensive attack. Bobcat defensemen lead the nation with 17 goals, 41 assists, 58 points, seven power-play goals, 22 power-play assists, 29 power-play points and five game-winning goals. Only nine schools in the nation have defensemen scoring at least 10 goals and just one other school (St. Cloud State) has defensemen combining for 40 points.
Youth Movement
Quinnipiac has one of the most productive freshman classes in the nation as they rank third with 16 goals, 27 assists and 43 points. Each of those totals is tops in ECAC Hockey.
