SCHENECTADY, New York – Nationally-ranked No. 1/1 Quinnipiac men's ice hockey tied Union, 3-3, in an ECAC Hockey match-up at Messa Rink in Schenectady, New York on Saturday night. With the tie, Quinnipiac goes to 23-2-7 overall and 14-1-5 in ECAC Hockey. In addition, Quinnipiac is now 4-1-7 in 12 overtime games this season. Union goes to 12-11-9 overall and 5-8-6 in ECAC Hockey play.
Travis St. Denis (Trail, British Columbia), Connor Clifton (Matawan, New Jersey) and Soren Jonzzon (Mountain View, California) all scored for the Bobcats while K.J. Tiefenwerth (Bellmore, New York) had two assists. Sam Anas (Potomac, Maryland) also picked up an assist to extend his scoring streak to 15 games in which he's accumulated 24 points on 12 goals and 12 assists. With the tie, coupled with Yale's 2-1 win against Clarkson, the Bobcats are four points ahead of the Bulldogs in the ECAC Hockey standings with two regular-season games remaining to play for the Cleary Cup.
St. Denis put the Bobcats out in front with his 17th goal of the season with six minutes left in the second period. Landon Smith (Greenwood Village, Colorado) played the puck up along the boards to Anas in Union's zone. Anas saw St. Denis across the ice and zipped a pass to the senior's tape on the opposite side of the ice. St. Denis collected the puck and then wristed a shot that tucked inside the near-side top corner and gave the Bobcats a 1-0 lead.
Moments later, following a Quinnipiac penalty, Union's Mike Vecchione scored just seven-seconds into the power play to tie the game at 1-1, with assists credited to Matt Wilkins and Jeff Taylor. Wilkins fed Vecchione who re-directed the puck past Quinnipiac goalie Michael Garteig (Prince George, British Columbia) to even the score.
Connor Clifton gave Quinnipiac the lead once-again less than a minute later. The Bobcats' junior defenseman took a pass from Tiefenwerth at the point and one-timed the puck through traffic, beating Union goalie Alex Sakellaropoulos to give Quinnipiac a 2-1 lead heading into the second intermission.
J.C. Brassard tied the game with his second goal of the season when he picked up a loose puck in the neutral zone, walked over the blue line and wristed a shot past Garteig to tie the game at 2-2.
Ninety-seconds later, Jonzzon scored his second goal in as many games to give Quinnipiac a 3-2 lead with most of the third period to play. Tiefenwerth fired a shot on goal that sailed wide before Kevin McKernan (Millbury, Massachusetts) picked up the rebound and sent it on goal. Sakellaropoulos made the save on McKernan's shot, but Jonzzon one-timed the rebound from the slot to beat the Dutchmen's goalie top-shelf as the Bobcats jumped out to a one-goal lead.
The back-and-forth play continued when Union created an odd-man rush that ended with Michael Pontarelli resting the puck just above the crease before finding a seam in front of the Bobcats' goalie and tipped a pass to Eli Lichtenwald. Lichtenwald one-timed the puck past Garteig as the Dutchmen tied the game for the second time in the period.
The Bobcats complete their regular-season schedule at home next weekend against Brown for Senior Night on Friday, Feb. 26 and Yale for the 14th Annual Heroes Hat on Saturday, Feb. 27. Both games can be seen live on SNY.
