WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – The Monmouth men's basketball team took a two-point lead into intermission after a closely-contest first half, and methodically pulled away with 51 second-half points for an 88-74 MAAC win over Quinnipiac on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, Monmouth improves its record on the year to 11-4 and moves to 3-1 in the MAAC, after a strong non-conference performance that featured wins over UCLA, Notre Dame, USC, Georgetown and Rutgers. The Hawks also snapped a 10-game losing streak against Quinnipiac, dating back to January of 2010 when the teams played in the Northeast Conference. Quinnipiac falls to 5-9 overall and 2-3 in the MAAC with the loss.
Junior guard Daniel Harris (Tampa, Fla. - pictured) led the Bobcats with 19 points, including a career-best five three-pointers, the most for a Quinnipiac player this season, while freshman forward Abdulai Bundu (Upper Marlboro, Md.) had a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Sophomore forward Chaise Daniels (Meriden, Conn.) returned from a five-week absence and six points and five rebounds in his first game action since an injury on Dec. 4 against Niagara. Micah Seaborn led the way for Monmouth with 20 points, while Chris Brady had a double-double with 16 points and 13 boards and Justin Robinson added 15.
Things look bleak for the Bobcats early, as Monmouth jumped out to a 12-0 lead and leading scorer Giovanni McLean (Bronx, N.Y.) went to the bench at the 16:14 mark with his second foul and didn't return in the half. However, Harris knocked down his first four three-point attempts, the fourth of which capped off a 19-3 run and put Quinnipiac ahead 19-15. Daniels provided a couple of key baskets during that stretch off the bench (including the first to stop the 12-0 run) in his first game action in five weeks.
After Quinnipiac led by as many as five, Monmouth was able to make a late run to pull ahead 37-33 on a Seaborn three-pointer with 45 seconds left. Freshman forward Abdulai Bundu (Upper Marlboro, Md.) converted on a baseline reverse on the ensuing Quinnipiac possession, and the Bobcats closed out with a stop to make the score 37-35 at the break.
The second half saw Monmouth edge its lead out further gradually until it went ahead by double digits at 62-51 on a putback from Chris Brady. McLean, who had all 15 of his points in the final 12 minutes, hit two foul shots and a three-pointer to get the Bobcats back within six at 62-56. However, Robinson answered with a deep three just before the shot clock expired to stop the comeback hopes.
The Bobcats hung relatively close late, but Monmouth was able to keep them at arm's length at the foul line, where they scored their last 19 points over the final three minutes before earning the 88-74 win, which represented its largest lead of the contest.
Quinnipiac earned a narrow edge in the battle of the boards, outrebounding the Hawks 50-46. The Bobcats came in leading the nation in offensive rebounds per game (18.0) and had 16 in the contest, with Bundu leading the way with four. Since the start of the 2012-13 season, Quinnipiac has been outrebounded only four times in 107 games, going 99-4-4 on the glass in that span.
Quinnipiac will be back in action on Friday when it returns home to face Siena at 7 p.m., which will be televised on ESPN3 as part of the MAAC's television package (note: time was moved up to 7 p.m. from its original 9 p.m. tip time).
