Quinnipiac | Siena
HAMDEN, Conn. - The Quinnipiac men's basketball team plays the first of two MAAC home games this weekend when it entertains Siena for a 7 p.m. contest on Friday evening at the TD Bank Sports Center, which will be aired on ESPN3 as part of the conference's game of the week package.
(please note: the starting time was moved up to 7 p.m. from its original 9 p.m. tip after the time slots for the televised games were announced)
Quinnipiac enters the contest at 2-3 in the MAAC after a road defeat at Monmouth on Saturday, snapping a 10-game winning streak in the series with the Hawks. The Bobcats have bounced back from their first two conference defeats this year to win and get back to .500, first taking a road win at Canisius on Dec. 5 and then getting a home win over Rider on Jan. 4.
Despite the loss, Quinnipiac's prospects were bolstered by the return of sophomore forward Chaise Daniels (Meriden, Conn. - pictured), who had six points and five rebounds in his first game action since Dec. 4, when he was injured in the opening minutes of a road loss to Niagara. Daniels ranked fourth in the nation in blocked shots (3.6 bpg) at the time of his injury and averaged 11.5 points per game, and his return gives the Bobcats an added weapon in the low post to go along with junior forward Donovan Smith (Chicago, Il.) and freshman forward Abdulai Bundu (Upper Marlboro, Md.).
Smith averaged 12.9 points in the eight games without Daniels, while Bundu was named the MAAC and ECAC Division I Rookie of the Week on Jan. 4 after averaging 19 points and 12 rebounds in two games, including 23 points and 15 rebounds at Maine on Dec. 29. Bundu added his second career double-double on Saturday at Monmouth with 12 points and 12 rebounds.
Siena comes in with a 10-6 record overall and 3-2 in the MAAC and will provide some strong competition for the Bobcats on the glass. Quinnipiac leads the MAAC with a +7.6 rebounding margin, while ranking first in the entire nation in offensive rebounds (17.9 per game). Siena is right behind in rebounding margin, though, at +7.3 margin to rank second in the MAAC. The Bobcats have led the nation in at least one rebounding category for each of the last five years, including rebounding margin for the last two.
After facing Siena on Friday, the Bobcats will be right back at home on Sunday to take on Canisius at 2 p.m. To purchase tickets for either game this weekend, and all Quinnipiac home games this season, contact the TD Bank Center Box Office at 203-582-3905 or visit online at QuinnipiacBobcats.com.
