Quinnipiac | Monmouth
HAMDEN. Conn. - The Quinnipiac men's basketball team heads to the road on Saturday for a 2 p.m. (ESPN3) road contest at Monmouth, which was the big story in the MAAC during non-conference play this season.
Quinnipiac comes into the game with a 2-2 record in the MAAC, getting back to level after a 64-60 home win over Rider on Monday. Monmouth is 2-1 in the MAAC and 10-4 overall, after picking up non-conference wins over UCLA, Notre Dame, USC, Georgetown and Rutgers, while earning votes in the top 25 polls.
The Bobcats have had an impressive run of success in the series with the Hawks as of late, winning 10 in a row, including a 68-64 win in West Long Branch last year behind 27 points from graduated senior Zaid Hearst. The Bobcats also won the rematch at home 72-52 behind a career-high 18 points from current senior James Ford, Jr. (Hopewell, Va. - pictured).
Quinnipiac earned the win over Rider with a dominant effort on the boards, returning to form after a rare off game in the rebounding department against Iona on Saturday. The Bobcats outrebounded the Broncs 51-32, one game after suffering a 57-42 deficit to Iona, the largest deficit in Head Coach Tom Moore's nine seasons at the helm.
In fact, the Iona game was only the second time in Moore's nine seasons that Quinnipiac was outrebounded by double digits. By contrast, the Rider game was the 105th time that the Bobcats were +10 or better on the boards in that span (264 games). Quinnipiac has led the nation in at least one rebounding statistic in each of the last five years, and currently leads the country in offensive rebounds per game (18.0), ahead of second-place West Virginia (17.3).
Quinnipiac has met Monmouth more than any other school since it joined the Division I ranks in 1998-99 (31 times). The two schools were members of the Northeast Conference and then both moved to the MAAC in 2003-04. The Bobcats hold an 18-13 lead in the series at the Division I level, and 19-13 overall, including one win while playing at Division II.
After facing Monmouth, Quinnipiac will return home for two games next weekend, facing Siena at 7 p.m. in another ESPN3 contest (note the time change from the original 9 p.m. start) and then faces Canisius on Sunday at 2 p.m. For ticket information, contact the TD Bank Sports Center Box Office at 516-582-3905 or visit us online at QuinnipiacBobcats.com.
