
No. 5/5 QU Women's Ice Hockey Wins 2015 Nutmeg Classic with 3-0 Shutout of Yale

NEW HAVEN, Connecticut – Sydney Rossman (Excelsior, Minnesota) was named the Most Valuable Goaltender of the Nutmeg Classic after picking up her fourth consecutive shutout as the nationally-ranked No. 5/5 Quinnipiac women's ice hockey team shut out the Yale Bulldogs, 3-0, to win their third straight Nutmeg Classic Championship and sixth overall on Saturday night at Ingalls Rink.
The Bobcats extended their unbeaten streak to eight games and winning streak to five games as they improve to 11-1-3 (5-1-2 ECAC Hockey) with the win and the Bulldogs fall to 2-7-1 (1-2-1 ECAC Hockey) with the loss. The Bobcats eight game unbeaten streak is tied for the second longest in program history while its five game-winning streak is tied for the fourth longest in program history. The Bobcats Nutmeg Classic title was also their fifth in the past six seasons as they have dominated opponents to a 12-1-0 record in their past 13 Nutmeg Classic games.
Taylar Cianfarano (Oswego, New York) was named the Most Valuable Player of the Nutmeg Classic as well as to the all-tournament team and Lindsey West (Ajax, Ontario) was also named to the all-tournament team to join Rossman who was goaltender on the all-tournament team.
Rossman needed just 15 saves to record her sixth shutout of the season and extend her shutout streak to four games 263:47, just 3:46 away from tying Chelsea Laden's program record shutout streak of 267:33. Rossman's fourth consecutive shutout also ties Laden's program record for consecutive shutouts.
Cianfarano recorded her third three-point game of the season and fifth of her career with one goal and two assists in the Bobcats win. Cianfarano picked up her 15th goal of the season with the game-winner on Saturday night, her seventh goal in five games for the Bobcats. Cianfarano now has 32 career goals, tied with Nicole Connery (Newmarket, Ontario) for ninth in program history. With two assists, Cianfarano tallied her third multiple assist game of the season to end the weekend with 15 goals and eight assists for 23 points.
Connery pulled even with Cianfarano in career goals with an insurance goal in the third period for her third goal of the season and 11th point. Connery's goal extended her point streak to four straight games as she has three goals and eight assists for 11 points.
Melissa Samoskevich (Sandy Hook, Connecticut) recorded her fourth multiple point game of the season with a goal and an assist on Saturday night. Samoskevich netted her fifth goal of the season with an empty-net goal to seal the victory for the Bobcats. Samoskevich now has five goals and 11 assists for 16 points this season, good for second on the team in points and third on the team in goals.
Emma Woods (Burford, Ontario) and West each recorded an assist in the Nutmeg Classic win to give Woods her fourth assist in the past five games for 10 this season to stay within one assist of Samoskevich's team lead. West's assist was her second of the season.
Cianfarano gave the Bobcats a 1-0 lead with 3:12 to play in the second period. West gathered the puck after a clear by the Bulldogs on the edge of the defensive zone where she fired a pass across the neutral zone to Samoskevich who popped the puck up on the blue line. Cianfarano skated into the offensive zone with the puck where she skated around a Bulldog defender into the slot and wristed a rocket past Yale goaltender Hanna Mandl's glove for the goal.
Connery doubled the Bobcats with 7:46 to play in the third period to provide the Bobcats with an insurance to and a 2-0 lead. After Cianfarano sent the puck toward the crease, the bouncing puck found Connery where she managed to tuck it home for the goal.
With just 2:26 to play in the third period, Samoskevich secured the victory for the Bobcats with an empty-net goal after taking a pass from Cianfarano and skating the puck deep into the offensive before burying the puck into the empty net.
The Quinnipiac women's ice hockey team returns home to High Point Solutions Arena next weekend where they will host the Dartmouth Big Green on Friday, Dec. 4 at 7 P.M. and the nationally-ranked No. 8/8 Harvard Crimson on Saturday, Dec. 5 at 4 P.M.
