QU Men's Ice Hockey's Michael Garteig's 59th Career Win Ties Program Record

HAMDEN, Connecticut – Quinnipiac men's ice hockey goalie Michael Garteig (Prince George, British Columbia) tied the program's career wins record in a 1-0 win against UMass in a non-conference match-up in Hamden. The Bobcats goalie picked up career win No. 59, tying the mark held by J.C. Wells '01 and Jamie Holden '05.
Garteig was incredible in goal again for the Bobcats, stopping all 28 shots he saw from the Minutemen. Behind Garteig, the Bobcats are now 13-0-2 to open the year as their unbeaten streak reaches 15 games. It was also Garteig's fourth shutout of the season and the 15th of his career.
Garteig has been particularly unstoppable at home as he has not allowed a goal in the last 168:21 minutes in goal at High Point Solutions Arena. For the year, Garteig is 8-0-2 in 10 home games this season with a 0.89 goals-against average and a .966 save percentage.
Quinnipiac got the board with just under twelve minutes to play in the first period when a bone-jarring hit by Soren Jonzzon (Mountain View, California) sent the puck along the boards behind the UMass net. Tim Clifton (Matawan, New Jersey) picked up the puck, cut back towards the middle of the ice and centered a pass to the slot that Scott Davidson (Trail, British Columbia) re-directed past UMass goalie Henry Dill to give the Bobcats a one-goal lead.
Through the remainder of the first and most of the second, Quinnipiac survived off the continued stellar play of Garteig who kicked away everything that UMass threw at him. Clifton also came up big for Quinnipiac when he cleared a loose puck in the crease after a save by Garteig while Bo Pieper (Roseville, Minnesota) also made a diving block on a shot from just above the goal line to preserve Quinnipiac's lead.
On the other of the ice, Quinnipiac continued to create scoring opportunities as Travis St. Denis (Trail, British Columbia) and Chase Priskie (Pembroke Pines, Florida) both hit a post. St. Denis also beat Dill on a breakaway, but was pulled down and the net was kicked out of position. The goal was waved off and St. Denis received a penalty shot, which he was denied on by Dill.
Quinnipiac resumes ECAC Hockey play when it faces Yale on Friday, Dec. 4 at Ingalls Rink in New Haven, Connecticut in a nationally televised match-up that can be seen live on American Sports Network (ASN) at 7 p.m. The Bobcats the head to Providence, Rhode Island on Saturday, Dec. 5 to take on Brown at Meehan Auditorium at 4 p.m.
