NEW HAVEN, Connecticut – Quinnipiac men's ice hockey goalie Michael Garteig (Prince George, British Columbia) broke the program's career win record with the 60th win of his career in a 3-0 shutout of No. 10 Yale at Ingalls Rink. Garteig's shutout is his fifth of the season and 16th of his career and pushes Quinnipiac's unbeaten streak to 16 games at 14-0-2 while also improving to 5-0-2 in ECAC Hockey play. Yale drops to 5-3-2 overall and 3-2-2 in league play.
Garteig was masterful in a brilliant performance in front of a capacity-plus crowd at the Bulldogs' historic home rink. The Bobcats' goalie has been incredible all season long, but is currently on a run in which he has allowed just two goals over his last 348 minutes for a 0.34 goals-against average and a .985 save percentage over his last six games played. For the year, Garteig is 14-0-2 with a 1.20 GAA and a .949 save percentage. For his career, the Bobcats' goalie is 60-21-11 with a 1.85 GAA and a .920 save percentage.
Quinnipiac junior Tim Clifton (Matawan, New Jersey) scored his team-leading ninth goal of the year, while Landon Smith (Greenwood Village, Colorado) and Devon Toews (Abbotsford, British Columbia) also scored for the Bobcats. Toews added an assist on Clifton's goal, while Soren Jonzzon (Mountain View, California) had two assists in the game.
Clifton put Quinnipiac on the board with his ninth goal of the year, tying him with Sam Anas (Potomac, Maryland) for the team lead. Toews dumped the puck into the Bulldogs' zone where Jonzzon chased it down in the corner and fed Clifton in the short-side face-off circle. Clifton walked across the crease and wristed a shot past Yale's Alex Lyon to give the Bobcats a 1-0 lead.
On the other end of the ice, Garteig was putting on a clinic for the Ingalls Rink faithful. Garteig's athleticism was on display as he turned back everything the Bulldogs threw at him – initial shots and rebound bids alike. Late in the second, Yale had two opportunities – the first coming from Stu Wilson from close range on an open net that Garteig kicked away. Moments later, John Hayden had a look from the slot off a puck off Garteig's pads that the Bobcats' goalie easily pounced on to preserve Quinnipiac's lead.
Off the opening draw to start the third period, Travis St. Denis (Trail, British Columbia) won a battle along the boards in front of the Yale bench and fed Landon Smith as he streaked by into the Bulldogs zone. Smith skated through the face-off circle, cocked-back and bounced one off the cross bar and in to give the Bobcats a 2-0 lead.
Four minutes later, Yale put a major rush on Garteig with several Grade-A opportunities from in front of the goal – the first coming on Stu Wilson's one-timer from the slot, through traffic, that Garteig easily gloved. Moments later, Anthony Walsh carried the puck the length of the ice before centering a pass from behind the Bobcats' goal to Hayden for the one-timer from the doorstep that the Bobcats' goalie played off his chest and covered, easily.
With two minutes to play, Jonzzon moved the puck up-ice to Toews who threw the puck on goal, but it was blocked by a player in front of Lyon and fluttered back to the boards. Toews crashed behind the Bulldogs net, picked up the puck and scored on the wrap-around to push Quinnipiac's lead to 3-0 in the closing minutes of play.
Quinnipiac returns to action when it travels to Providence, Rhode Island on Saturday, Dec. 5 to face Brown in an ECAC Hockey match-up at Meehan Auditorium at 4 p.m. The Bobcats return home for their final game of the first half of the year when they host Boston University on Saturday, Dec. 12 at 7 p.m. The Bobcats' non-conference match-up against the Terriers can be seen live on SNY, where available.
