HAMDEN, Connecticut – National-ranked No. 2/3 Quinnipiac men's ice hockey came-from-behind to tie No. 20 Clarkson, 1-1, in an ECAC Hockey match-up at High Point Solutions Arena. The Bobcats remain undefeated through its first 12 games at 11-0-1 while they also move to 4-0-1 in ECAC Hockey play. Clarkson goes to 5-3-2 overall and 0-2-2 in league action.
Freshman Luke Shiplo (Oakville, Ontario) scored in his second-consecutive game after blasting a shot top-shelf on Clarkson goalie Greg Lewis for his second career goal. K.J. Tiefenwerth (Bellmore, New York) and Tanner MacMaster (Calgary, Alberta) both had assists on the play. In goal, Michael Garteig (Prince George, British Columbia) stopped 25 of Clarkson's 26 shots on goal including 22-straight to close the game. Garteig goes to 11-0-1 on the year.
A physical, fast-paced game from the start, the Golden Knights controlled play through most of the first two periods. Both teams combined for 17 penalties, including 10 between the two teams in a second period that featured 10-minute misconducts before heading into the second intermission. Quinnipiac out-shot Clarkson, 34-26, while its penalty kill unit was 5-for-5.
Nic Pierog put Clarkson on the board with his second goal of the season with less than four minutes to play in the first period. Brett Gervais won a battle behind the Bobcats' bench and wrapped the puck up the boards to Janick Asselin. Asselin then handed the puck to Pierog in the slot. Pierog flipped the puck off of Garteig's leg before handling his own rebound and tipping it over Garteig's blocker to give the Golden Knights the lead.
Early in the third, Tiefenwerth duck behind a Clarkson defender behind the Golden Knights goal and poked the puck into the corner. MacMaster won a battle in the corner, walked up the boards and then zipped the puck across the zone to Shiplo. With Soren Jonzzon screening Lewis, Shiplo's shot from just above the face-off circle found the top corner on the opposite post to tie the game at 1-1.
Both teams traded "Grade-A" opportunities over the remaining time in regulation, and again in overtime, with both goalies showing poise in denying either team's offensive push.The Bobcats are now 5-0-5 in its last 10 overtime games through last season.
The Bobcats return to action with their fifth game in nine days on Saturday, Nov. 20 when it hosts No. 14 St. Lawrence for an ECAC Hockey match-up at High Point Solutions Arena at the TD Bank Sports Center. Tickets for tomorrow's night game pitting two Top 20 teams can be purchased by calling the TD Bank Sports Center Ticket Office at 203-582-3905.
