HARTFORD, Connecticut – Sam Anas (Potomac, Maryland) recorded his second three-point game of the season Tuesday night with two goals and one assist as the nationally-ranked No. 3/2 Quinnipiac men's ice hockey team came back from a two-goal deficit with six unanswered goals to blow past the UConn Huskies 6-2 at the XL Center in front of 5,476 fans.
With the victory, the Bobcats extended their winning streak to 11 games to break the program record of 10 straight victories, which they previously accomplished in their final season at the Division II level in 1997-98. Quinnipiac improved its record to 11-0-0 (4-0-0 ECAC Hockey) with the win Tuesday night while UConn dropped to 3-9-0 (1-6-0 Hockey East).
The Bobcats piled on four power play goals in the game for the first time since Oct. 15, 2011 against the Canisius Golden Griffins after netting four straight power play goals in the first and second periods. In the midst of their power play goals, the Bobcats overcame a deficit of two goals for the second time this season after trailing the St. Cloud State Huskies 2-0 on Oct. 24 before coming back to win 5-2 with five unanswered goals.
Quinnipiac has scored six goals in back to back game and have recorded five games of five or more goals through the first 11 games of the season. Last season, the Bobcats recorded just four games of five or more goals in the entire season.
With three points, Anas moved within three points of the 100 career-point mark with 97 points. Anas has now scored at least one goal in three straight games while recording a point in five consecutive games. Anas has tallied a point in 10 of the 11 games this season for the Bobcats, one of two players on the team to accomplish the feat.
Tim Clifton (Matawan, New Jersey) extended his goal-scoring streak to seven games with a power play goal in the second period. Clifton's goal was his eighth of the season and fifth on the power play, both tied with teammate Travis St. Denis (Trail, British Columbia) for the team lead. Clifton also added an assist in the third period for his fourth multiple-point game of the season. St. Denis added a power play goal of his own in the Bobcats' explosive second period and also added an assist for a two-point night, his fourth multiple point game of the season and seventh straight game with a point. Just like Anas, St. Denis has also recorded a point in 10 of the 11 games this season.
Freshman Luke Shiplo (Oakville, Ontario) scored his first career goal with a third period marker that silenced the XL Center to give the Bobcats a commanding 6-2 lead. Fellow defenseman Connor Clifton (Matawan, New Jersey) scored his third goal of the season as the Bobcats' defenseman tallied his ninth point of the season.
Chase Priskie (Pembroke Pines, Florida) recorded his 11th assist of the year to extend his national lead of assists by a defenseman. Landon Smith (Greenwood Village, Colorado) added a pair of assists to give him seven on the season for his second multiple-point game of the season. Derek Smith (Apple Valley, Minnesota), Andrew Taverner (Edmonton, Alberta), Tanner MacMaster (Calgary, Alberta) and Scott Davidson (Trail, British Columbia) all picked up assists for the Bobcats in the win.
Goaltender Michael Garteig (Prince George, British Columbia) picked up his national-best 11th victory of the season Tuesday night after coming into the game in the second period with the Bobcats trailing 2-1 and didn't allow a goal over the final 40 minutes. Garteig needed just seven saves to pick up his 57th career victory, two shy of tying the Bobcats' program record of 59 held by J.C. Wells and Jamie Holden.
Just 1:10 into the first period UConn's Joseph Masonius gave the Huskies a 1-0 lead. After working the puck around, Spencer Naas hit Max Letunov with a pass at the point. Letunov then worked the puck to his left with Masonius where Masonius skated into the face-off circle before ripping the shot past the Bobcats' starting goaltender Sean Lawrence's (Granite Bay, California) blocker.
UConn scored a second goal with 8:21 to play in the first period Max Kalter's second goal of the season. Johnny Austin made a great play at the blue to keep the puck in the offensive zone. After faking a shot, Austin passed it to the right point where Max Kalter waited for the pass before skating into the right face-off circle and firing the shot past Lawrence to take a 2-0 lead.
Anas cut the Huskies lead in half to 2-1 with 3:13 to play in the 1st period after scoring his third power play goal of the season. The Bobcats worked the puck around well in the cycle, before St. Denis peppered a pass to Smith on the end line where he one-timed a pass to Anas in the slot. Anas then fired a one-timer past UConn goaltender Rob Nichols' glove side for the goal.
The Bobcats got themselves right back into the game early in the second period with a pair of goals in a span of 13 seconds. Anas scored his second power play goal of the game 51 seconds into the second period to tie the game 2-2. Just 13 seconds later, the Bobcats scored their second goal of the period when Connor Clifton picked off a pass in the offensive zone and skated with steam on goal where he ripped a wrister past Nichols to give the Bobcats a 3-2 lead and overcome the two-goal deficit with his unassisted goal.
Quinnipiac piled on two more goals later in the second period thanks to a seven minute power play due to a minor and major penalty to UConn's Evan Richardson. St. Denis picked up the Bobcats' third power play goal of the game 3:55 into the second period after MacMaster skated the puck into the offensive zone and dropped off a pass for Anas. Anas then shipped the puck into the right face-off circle where St. Denis rifled a shot past Nichols to give the Bobcats a 4-2 lead.
The Bobcats added another power play goal 31 seconds later to take a 5-2 lead with 15:34 to play in the second period with Tim Clifton's fifth power play goal of the season. Shiplo worked the puck from the left point to Priskie at the right point before completing the passing to Taverner at the right face-off circle. Taverner then passed the puck back to Priskie at the point where Priskie fired a shot towards the goal that deflected off an UConn defender and Clifton past Nichols for the goal.
Shiplo added his first career goal midway through the third period with 10:41 to play in the contest. Clifton sent the puck up to Davidson where he left off a pass for Shiplo skating to his right. Shiplo then wristed a shot high past Nichols glove to give the Bobcats a 6-2 lead with their sixth unanswered goal of the game.
