HAMDEN, Connecticut - Sam Anas (Potomac, Maryland) scored his 50th career goal Friday night in the nationally-ranked No. 4/3 Quinnipiac men's ice hockey team's three-goal second period as they roared past the No. 7/6 Harvard Crimson 4-1 at High Point Solutions Arena.
The Bobcats (9-0-0, 3-0-0 ECAC Hockey) extended their winning streak to nine games to open up the 2015-16 season, tying their longest winning streak in the program's Division I history when they recorded a nine game-winning streak during the 2013-14 season. The Bobcats are now one game shy of tying their overall program record 10 game-winning streak which they set during their final season at the Division II level when they won 10 straight games to open up the season. Harvard (3-1-1, 3-1-1 ECAC Hockey) picked up its first loss of the season in the contest leaving Quinnipiac and No. 1/1 Providence as the only unbeaten teams left in the country. Quinnipiac is the only team in the nation that has yet to record a loss or tie.
With four goals in the game, the Bobcats have now scored at least four goals in eight of the nine games they've played this year. Quinnipiac is fourth in the nation in goals scored (39) and fourth in goals per game (4.33) after the win over Harvard.
Anas is the 17th player in program history to record 50 career goals with his second period tally, and the first player to join the exclusive club since Kellen Jones in 2014. Anas is also the first Quinnipiac player to record his 50th career goal as a junior since David Marshall during the 2007-08 season. Anas' goal was his fifth of the 2015-16, good for third on the team.
Tim Clifton (Matawan, New Jersey) recorded his first multiple-goal game of the season Friday night with a power play goal and a shorthanded empty-net goal. This is the second straight season in which Clifton has recorded a power play goal and a shorthanded goal in the same game after accomplishing the same feat on Nov. 29, 2014 at Massachusetts. Clifton is currently riding a five-game goal scoring streak, as he has recorded at least one goal in every game he has dressed. With six goals, Clifton only trails Travis St. Denis (Trail, British Columbia) who leads the team with seven. Clifton has also tallied three power play goals on the season, second to St. Denis who has four.
Tommy Schutt (Chanhassan, Minnesota) found the back of the net for the third time this season with his game-winning goal early in the second period that set the momentum for the rest of the game. Schutt moved into a tie with Andrew Taverner (Edmonton, Alberta) and Thomas Aldworth (Keller, Texas) for third on the team with three goals this season.
St. Denis, K.J. Tiefenwerth (Bellmore, New York), Bo Pieper (Roseville, Minnesota), Landon Smith (Greenwood Village, Colorado), Derek Smith (Apple Valley, Minnesota) and Chase Priskie (Pembroke Pines, Florida) all tallied assists in the top 10 victory for the Bobcats. With his assist, Priskie continues to lead the nation in assists by a defenseman with nine and is tied for second with 10 points.
Michael Garteig (Prince George, British Columbia) continued to impress for the Bobcats in goal as picked up his nation-leading ninth victory of the season with 19 saves on 20 Harvard shots. Friday night marked the fifth game this season in which Garteig has allowed one or fewer goals as the Bobcats' netminder won his 55th career game.
After a scoreless first period, Schutt gave the Bobcats a 1-0 lead just 2:41 into the second period. Pieper controlled the puck behind the net before shifting the puck to Tiefenwerth just below the right face-off circle. Tiefenwerth attempted a shot but the puck slid off his stick but found Schutt streaking down the slot where he rocketed the puck into the back of the net.
The Bobcats struck nearly 10 minutes later as Anas netted the Bobcats second goal of the game to make it 2-0. McKernan dumped the puck down the right boards to the corner where it was misplayed by Harvard defenseman Wiley Sherman. Smith skated ferociously in the corner and used his body to win the puck. Smith found Anas with a pass all alone in the right face-off circle where he fired a wrister high over Harvard goaltender Michael Lackey's glove to give the Bobcats a 2-0 lead.
After a five-minute major to Harvard's Seb Lloyd, the Bobcats opened up the scoring with their first power play goal of the game from Tim Clifton with 50.4 seconds left in the second period to make it 3-0 Quinnipiac. Priskie added yet another assist to his impressive freshman total as he circled from behind the goal line to the point with the puck before he worked the puck from the point to Derek Smith on his left just above the face-off circle. Smith passed the puck to Priskie at the point before Priskie sent it right back to Smith above the face-off circle again. Smith fired a shot on goal but Clifton stood strong in from and tipped it past Lackey.
The Crimson found the back of the net with just 30.8 seconds remaining in the game after they pulled Lackey to have a 6 on 3 power play opportunity. Tyler Moy fed a pass from the high slot to Alexander Kerfoot on the right wing. Kerfoot skated into the high slot and fired a shot on goal that was re-directed by Jimmy Vesey but knocked down by traffic. With the puck still loose on the doorstep, Wiley Sherman flung the puck past Garteig to cut the Quinnipiac lead to 3-1.
Right off the following face-off, St. Denis won the puck to Tim Clifton on the wing where he fired the puck from center ice to the empty Harvard goal for the short-handed empty-net goal to reclaim the Bobcats' three-goal lead just one second after Harvard had cut it to two.
The Quinnipiac men's ice hockey team returns to action on Saturday night when they host the Dartmouth Big Green at High Point Solutions Arena with puck drop scheduled for 7 P.M.
