NEW HAVEN, Connecticut – The Quinnipiac women's ice hockey team fell for the first time in the 2015-16 season after a high-scoring third period led to a 4-3 victory for the Yale Bulldogs Saturday afternoon at Ingalls Rink.
Yale's victory was their first of the season as they improve to 1-2-0 (1-1-0 ECAC Hockey) while the Bobcats loss was their first of the season as they fall to 5-1-1 (1-1-0 ECAC Hockey) to snap a six game unbeaten streak and five game winning streak.
Emma Woods (Burford, Ontario) led the Bobcats in scoring with one goal and one assist for her fourth multi-point game of the season and 12th of her career. Woods tallied her fourth goal of the season in the loss while tallying her fifth assist.
Cydney Roesler (Stittsville, Ontario) and Meghan Turner (Bedford, New Hampshire) each tallied goals in the third period for the Bobcats, with Roesler's coming on a blast on the power play. Both Roesler and Turner's goals were their second of the season. Roesler's goal now gives her one point in six consecutive games, one shy of tying Regan Boulton's program record of seven straight games with a point by a defenseman.
Taylar Cianfarano (Oswego, New York) and Melissa Samoskevich (Sandy Hook, Connecticut) each picked assists in the victory to extend their point streaks to seven games. Samoskevich's assist gives her a team-high nine on the season while Cianfarano's was her fifth, as both players are tied for the team lead in points with 12. Samoskevich is one game shy of tying Kelly Babstock's program record of eight straight games with a point by a freshman, while Cianfarano saw her consecutive games with a goal streak come to an end at five, tied with Babstock for the longest such streak in program history.
Freshman Randi Marcon (Winnipeg, Manitoba) picked up her first career assist for the Bobcats on Turner's goal early in the third period. Kristen Tamberg (North Toronto, Ontario) also picked up an assist on the goal, her third of the season and second of the weekend.
Despite the 4-3 loss, the Bobcats still outshot the Bulldogs 26-9 in the contest, including an 8-1 edge in the second period. In the weekend, the Bobcats allowed just 12 total shots on goal in two games.
Yale took a 1-0 lead with just 2:20 remaining in the first period to hand the Bobcats their first deficit of the season. Janelle Ferrara skated the puck into the slot before backhanding a pass to Mallory Souliotis at the right point. Souliotis ripped a shot from the point that was redirected by Jordan Chancellor at the left post past Rossman for her second goal of the season.
Woods tied up the game early in the second period with her fourth of the season coming just 1:36 into the period. Samoskevich fed the puck from the neutral zone up the left boards to Cianfarano crossing over the blue line. Cianfarano skated through the left faceoff dot towards the net before centering the puck to Woods in the right side of the slot for the one-timer past Yale goaltender Hanna Mandl to make it 1-1.
The Bulldogs took a 2-1 lead with 16:37 to play in the third period on their second power play goal of the season. Eden Murray stood on the back door waiting for a pass from Souliotis to put home the puck. Souliotis' assist was her second of the game.
Yale's lead was short-lived; however, as the Bobcats answered right back 55 seconds later to tie the game 2-2. Marcon sifted the puck from the left faceoff circle to Tamberg at the right point where she fired a shot towards the left post that was redirected home by Turner for the Bobcats' equalizer.
The Bobcats took a lead midway through the third period with 9:50 to play after coming from behind down one goal. After a two penalties by the Bulldogs in a nine second span led to a five-on-three power play, the Bobcats worked the puck on perfectly. After several created chances, Woods shifted the puck from the high slot to Cianfarano at the right point. Cianfarano slid the puck across the offensive zone to the left point where Roesler blasted a one-timer past Mandl, who didn't see the puck due to a beautiful screen from Turner.
Ferrara responded with two goals in a span of 35 seconds to tie the game once again for the Bulldogs before taking the ultimate lead. Ferrara's first goal came with 4:34 to play in the third period after Chancellor had her shot at the bottom of the left faceoff dot blocked by Alicia Barry but Ferrara swooped in to rip a shot over Rossman's blocker shoulder to tie the game 3-3.
After a Roesler tripping penalty put the Bulldogs on the power play, Yale worked the puck around the offensive zone as Marchin passed a tape to tape pass to Staenz. After gathering the puck, Staenz found Ferrara on the doorstep for her second goal in 35 seconds to give the Bulldogs a 4-3 lead with 3:59 to play in the third period.
The Quinnipiac women's ice hockey team returns to action next weekend as they return home to host the Colgate Raiders on Friday, Nov. 6 at 7 P.M. and the Cornell Big Red on Saturday, Nov. 7 at 4 P.M. Saturday's game will be the Bobcats second annual DIFD Game, where they will raise money and awareness for mental health through the Do It For Daron foundation.
