No. 7 QU Women’s Ice Hockey Battles to Scoreless Draw Against Colgate

HAMDEN, Connecticut – One simple look at the box score will clearly show shots weren't the problem on Friday night for the No. 7 nationally-ranked Quinnipiac women's ice hockey team. Despite outshooting the Colgate Raiders, 44-22, the Bobcats couldn't break through for a goal as the two sides played to a scoreless 0-0 tie in ECAC Hockey play. The tie moves Quinnipiac to 5-1-2 (1-1-1 ECAC Hockey) while Colgate's record stands 4-1-4 (0-0-3 ECAC Hockey).
Quinnipiac goalie Sydney Rossman (Excelsior, Minnesota) matched her counterpart Ashlynne Rando (44 saves) blow-for-blow as the Bobcat junior tallied 22 saves on her way to notching the fourth shutout of her career in just 20 appearances.
The 0-0 decision marks the first scoreless draw for Quinnipiac since Nov. 9, 2013 when the Bobcats skated to a scoreless tie against the Yale Bulldogs at Ingalls Rink in the third ECAC Hockey weekend of the 2013-14 season. The tie against Yale was their second 0-0 tie of the season, having tied St. Cloud State 0-0 in St. Cloud, Minnesota on Oct. 4, 2013 in the season opener.
The devastatingly quick pace of play was set for the onset as Quinnipiac racked up double digit shot totals in every period except overtime, including a game-high 17 in the first period alone. Meghan Turner (Bedford, New Hampshire) and Emma Woods (Burford, Ontario) led the Bobcats' offensive attack with five shots apiece while five other Bobcats tallied four each.
In the early going, shots from the point flew in consistently on Rando but the Raiders' senior goalkeeper was on her A game from the opening faceoff. One of which came off the stick of Lindsey West (Ajax, Ontario) as the lefthanded wrister from the far boards was initially stopped by Rando but the rebound trickled towards the goal line. With Rando scrambling to locate the puck and Randi Marcon (Winnipeg, Manitoba) hard-charging at the net, Colgate's defense managed to scramble back and clear away the danger.
Rossman was sharp from the start as Colgate's offense began to pick up in the second period as the Raiders fired nine shots-on-goal in the second frame alone. Olivia Zafuto very nearly made the Bobcat defense pay as the fourth line forward deeked out two Quinnipiac skaters from the center faceoff dot. Zafuto entered the zone and wound up a wrister low on Rossman but the goalie managed to stay with the puck and get a piece with her skate to deflect away the blast.
Late in the third period, the Bobcats saw their best scoring chance of the afternoon again denied with a fantastic save from Rando. On a three-on-one rush up-ice, Nicole Connery (Newmarket, Ontario) possessed past the near side faceoff dot before centering to Nicole Kosta (Mississauga, Ontario) in the slot. Kosta's uncovered one-timer in prime scoring position was then gloved beautifully by Rando, leaving no chance for a rebound.
Colgate very nearly skated away from this one with a win as the Raiders dominated overtime period, notching four shots while holding the possession loving Bobcats without a shot-on-goal in the five-minute frame. It was Zafuto again with a prime scoring chance as Shannon Ormel centered from the near side corner to an uncovered Zafuto right in front. Luckily for Quinnipiac, Rossman was in perfect position as the shot was smothered right in the goalie's chest without any rebound opportunity.
The final horn sounded on the 0-0 tie as Quinnipiac's offense failed to score a goal for the first time all season. The Bobcats' previous season-low for goals came all the way back on the opening weekend series on Oct. 3 as Quinnipiac defeated Mercyhurst, 2-1.
Quinnipiac looks to get back on the winning side on Saturday afternoon as the Bobcats welcome Cornell to the High Point Solutions Arena for a 4 PM start.
