RICHMOND, British Columbia – Junior captain Makayla Watson and incoming first year Rosalie Breton have been named to Canada's National Women's Development Team, as announced by Hockey Canada on Sunday, Aug. 9.
Watson and Breton are two of seven defensemen selected to the 22-player roster that will represent Canada in a three-game series against the United States, held Aug. 12-15 at the Richmond Olympic Oval.
The selection follows Watson and Breton's participation in Canada's National Women's Team Development Camp, held Aug. 2-9. The duo was among 40 of the country's top players competing for a roster spot on the Development Team.
A native of Calgary, Alberta, Watson will make her second consecutive appearance with the National Women's Development Team. The defenseman recorded two assists during last year's series. Breton, a native of Saint-Bernard, Quebec, will make her Development Team debut.
Watson and Breton previously played together on Canada's National Women's U18 Team, earning a bronze medal at the 2024 IIHF U18 Women's World Championship in Switzerland. The pair also helped Canada's National Women's U18 Team sweep a three-game series against the United States in 2023.
At Quinnipiac, Watson appeared in 36 games during her sophomore campaign, recording six goals and 20 assists for 26 points. She helped lead the Bobcats to their second ECAC Championship in program history and fifth NCAA Tournament appearance. Watson was named to the ECAC All-Tournament Team after recording two assists during the championship weekend and earned All-ECAC Second Team, marking her second All-ECAC honor in as many years.
