
QU Women's Ice Hockey Sets Program Records in 4-0 Shutout of Brown

PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island – The Quinnipiac women's ice hockey team stormed past the Brown Bears, 4-0, Friday night at Meehan Auditorium behind Taylar Cianfarano (Oswego, New York) and Melissa Samoskevich's (Sandy Hook, Connecticut) third consecutive multi-point games.
With just three shots on goal allowed, the Bobcats set a program record for fewest shots allowed on goal in a single game, breaking last season's program record of four allowed at Union on Jan. 2, 2015. The Bobcats allowed just 12 total shot attempts all game as they outshot the Bears, 37-3. Throughout the game, Quinnipiac outshot Brown 14-2 in the first period, 12-1 in the second period and 11-0 in the third period.
Quinnipiac improves to 5-0-1 (1-0-0 ECAC Hockey) on the season while Brown falls to 0-3-0 (0-1-0 ECAC Hockey). The Bobcats extended their unbeaten streak to six games, tied for the second longest streak to open up a season in program history and seventh unbeaten streak of at least six games in the past three seasons. The Bobcats are also riding a five game winning streak, their sixth such streak in the past five seasons.
Cianfarano continued to fill up the stat sheet with her second two-goal game of the season and third straight multi-point game as she extended her point streak to six games, joining Samoskevich as the only two Quinnipiac women's ice hockey players to record points in all six games this season. Cianfarano has seven goals and four assists for 11 points to lead the team in goals and is tied for th team lead in points.With two goals, Cianfarano has now tallied five career multi-goal games in just 43 career games played. Cianfarano's two goals Friday night were her fifth straight game with at least one goal, tying Kelly Babstock's program record for consecutive games with a goal which she set from Oct 5-19, 2012 during the 2012-13 season.
Samoskevich tallied her third goal and eighth assist of the season with her two-point night. With eight assists, Samoskevich continues to lead the Bobcats while she remains tied with Cianfarano for the team lead in points with 11. Samoskevich's six-game point streak is just two games shy of tying Kelly Babstock's program record of eight straight games to start her collegiate career. Babstock recorded two separate eight-game point scoring streaks as freshman for the second longest streaks overall in program history.
The Bobcats have a third point streak in the works as well, as Cydney Roesler (Stittsville, Ontario) recorded an assist on Samoskevich's goal for her fifth assist and sixth point of the season, extending her point streak to five consecutive games. Roesler is approaching Regan Boulton's program record of seven straight games with a point by a defenseman, set from Jan. 28-Feb. 18, 2012 during the 2011-12 season.
Nicole Brown (Oshawa, Ontario) rounded out the scoring for the Bobcats on Friday night with her first goal of the season for the Bobcats, giving her 13 career goals and 43 career points.
Emma Woods (Burford, Ontario) picked up her first two-assist and third two-point game of the season. Woods' assists are also good for her third career two-assist game and 11th two-point game. Taryn Baumgardt (Innisfail, Alberta) and Kristen Tamberg (North Toronto, Ontario) also cracked the stat sheet, as they each picked up their second assists of the season while Meghan Turner (Bedford, New Hampshire) recorded her first assist of the season with an assist on Brown's goal.
Netminder Sydney Rossman (Excelsior, Minnesota) recorded just three saves to record her first shutout of the 2015-16 season and third of her career. Rossman improves her record to 5-0-1 this season and extends her personal unbeaten streak to 11 straight games (9-0-2). Rossman has yet to lose a game in her college career.
Samoskevich gave the Bobcats a lead early in the first period with her goal 8:03 into the contest and the Bobcats never looked back. As Brown tried to clear the puck out of the defensive zone, Roesler pinched up to the blue line to keep the puck in the offensive zone. Roesler fed a cross-ice pass to Woods in the left faceoff circle where quickly passed it back into the slot to Samoskevich. After receiving the pass, Samoskevich fed it back down to Woods on the weak side and despite an open net, centered the puck back across the slot to Samoskevich. After her initial attempt was denied, Samoskevich banged home the rebound for the goal.
The Bobcats took a 2-0 lead with 11:08 to play in the 2nd period after Cianfarano continued her impressive start to the season. After Brown got the puck out of their defensive zone, Baumgardt corralled it in the center circle and circled around to the right boards. Samoskevich was positioned right on the blue line, where Baumgardt fed her with a pass. After skating the puck into the offensive zone, Samoskevich fired a pass to Cianfarano in the slot where she skated to her left before blasting a slap shot high over Brown goaltender Monica Elvin's glove for the goal.

Tamberg skated the puck into the offensive zone before hitting Randi Marcon with a pass in the left faceoff circle. Marcon shifted the puck back to the left point for Tamberg where she ripped a shot towards the net. Turner gathered the rebound right on the doorstep where her shot was denied by Elvin's pad, but the next rebound found Brown where she buried the puck five-hole past Elvin.
Cianfarano added her second marker of the game with just 1:43 left to play to secure the Bobcats 4-0 win over the Bears. Woods chased down a loose puck behind the Brown goal and tapped it to the right corner for Cianfarano. After Cianfarano fed the puck back around to Woods on the left side of the good, Woods fired a centering feed to Cianfarano on the back door where she tapped home the puck with a one-timer past Elvin.
