HAMDEN, Connecticut - Nationally-ranked No. 17 Quinnipiac men's ice hockey defeated Arizona State, 5-0, in a non-conference match-up at High Point Solutions Arena at the TD Bank Sports Center. With the win, Quinnipiac improves to 3-0-0 on the year while Arizona State drops to 1-2-0 through the first three NCAA Division I games in its program's history.
Four different Bobcats scored against the Sun Devils, led by freshman Thomas Aldworth's (Keller, Texas) two-goal outing. Aldworth also added an assist giving him six points in his last two games. Sam Anas (Potomac, Maryland), Devon Toews (Abbotsford, British Columbia) and Travis St. Denis (Trail, British Columbia) all scored for the Bobcats, with Toews also adding an assist. In goal, Bobcats senior Michael Garteig (Prince George, British Columbia) recorded his 12th career shutout to improve to 3-0-0 on the year while also picking up his 49th career win.
The Bobcats' lone tally of the first period came when Garteig stopped a puck dumped into the Quinnipiac zone and handed it to Chase Priskie (Pembroke Pines, Florida). Priskie zipped a pass up-ice to Aldworth who blitzed through the neutral zone, walked around a defender and wristed a shot on Arizona State goalie Ryland Pashovitz. Aldworth's shot tucked inside the near post to put the Bobcats out in front, 1-0.
The goal came on the power play, giving Quinnipiac its fifth tally with a man-advantage in three games. Aldworth scored for the second time in as many games while Priskie now has a point in the first three games of his collegiate career. Garteig was also credited with the second assist, giving him three for his career.
Midway through the second period, Tanner MacMaster (Calgary, Alberta) handled the puck along the boards to the left of Arizona State's goal. MacMaster then zipped the puck across the Sun Devils' zone to Derek Smith (Apple Valley, Minnesota). Smith hammered a pass to the opposite slot for Aldworth who one-timed the pack past Pashovitz to give Quinnipiac a 2-0 lead.
Toews then got in on the action, scoring his first of the year to give Quinnipiac a three-goal lead. Toews skated over center ice and handed the puck off to Soren Jonzzon (Mountain View, California) on the blue line. Jonzzon sent the puck back to Toews, who slid the puck between Pashovitz's pads to push Quinnipiac's lead to 3-0.
Anas potted his third of the year less than two minutes into the second period. Luke Shiplo (Oakville, Ontario) picked up a loose puck below the blue line in the Bobcats' defensive zone and fired a pass to Anas a center ice. Anas walked into the Arizona State zone and snipped a shot over Pashovitz's right shoulder to give the Bobcats a 4-0 lead.
St. Denis got in on the action with his second goal in as many games, this one coming on a 5-on-3 power play. Aldworth held the puck on the goal line to the right of ASU's goal before handing it to Toews in the face-off circle. Toews turned and fed St. Denis on the opposite post for the one-timer to put Quinnipiac on top, 5-0.
