HAMDEN, Connecticut – The nationally-ranked No. 14 Quinnipiac men's ice hockey defeated Maine, 4-0, in a non-conference match-up at High Point Solutions Arena at TD Bank Sports Center. The Bobcats improve to 4-0-0 on the year while Maine drops to 0-2-3 on the season.
Quinnipiac goalie Michael Garteig (Prince George, British Columbia) became the fifth goalie in school history to record 50 wins for his career with a brilliant 20-save shutout against the Black Bears. The clean sheet is Garteig's second consecutive shutout and the 13th of his career.
Quinnipiac freshman Chase Priskie (Pembroke Pines, Florida) scored his first career goal and also picked up an assist while Devon Toews (Abbotsford, British Columbia), K.J. Tiefenwerth (Bellmore, New York) and Tommy Schutt (Chanhassen, Minnesota) all scored for the Bobcats. Sam Anas (Potomac, Maryland), Connor Clifton (Matawan, New Jersey) and Craig Martin (Trail, British Columbia) all picked up assists in the Bobcats' win.
Midway through the first period Quinnipiac found itself on the power play after a hooking call on Maine's Nolan Vesey. Quinnipiac proceeded to rifle off nine shots on goal before a shot by Sam Anas sailed wide of the Black Bears' goal. Bouncing off the boards and finding its way to the slot, the puck was picked up by a Maine defender who attempted to clear it out of the Black Bears' zone. Priskie knocked it down just above the blue line, skated to the outside and walked by a defenseman to the right of Maine goalie Matt Morris before wristing a shot to the opposite post to give Quinnipiac a 1-0 lead.
Early in the second period, Quinnipiac took advantage of another failed clear by Maine. Quinnipiac pressured deep in the Black Bears' zone, moving the puck with ease before K.J. Tiefenwerth's pass went off a Maine skate and sat in the slot. A Maine defender picked it up and attempted to flick it out of the zone but Schutt picked up loose puck above the face-off circle. With the goalie screened by Tiefenwerth, Schutt's slapper found its way to the far post where it caromed in to give Quinnipiac a 2-0 lead.
Coming out of the first break, Quinnipiac found itself on the power play gain. Maine managed to harass the Bobcats' power play unit, clearing the puck down ice. Priskie took control of the puck and held it behind the Bobcats' goal for Toews. Toews then took it the length of the ice, tipped it over a Maine defender and then flicked it past Morris to give the Bobcats a 3-0 lead.
Late in the second period, Tiefenwerth got on the board with his first career goal at Quinnipiac. Martin got the puck to Connor Clifton who fed Tiefenwerth. Tiefenwerth fired a shot on goal, followed it off of Moore's pads and then converted to give Quinnipiac a 4-0 lead.
Quinnipiac is back in action this weekend when it hosts St. Cloud State for a two-game set on Oct. 23-24 at High Point Solutions Arena at the TD Bank Sports Center. Puck drop is set for 7 P.M. for both games.
