HAMDEN, Connecticut – No. 18 Quinnipiac men's ice hockey completed the two-game sweep of Holy Cross with a 4-2 win in its home opener at High Point Solutions Arena at the TD Bank Sports Center in front of a capacity crowd of 3,560. Quinnipiac opens the year at 2-0-0 while Holy Cross drops to 0-2-0 on the year.
Freshman Thomas Aldworth (Keller, Texas) had a goal and two assists in a break-out performance that highlighted the Bobcats' first home game of the 2015-16 season. Tim Clifton (Matawan, New Jersey) scored his second goal in as many nights while also setting up Aldworth for his first assist for the year. Soren Jonzzon (Mountain View, California) and Travis St. Denis (Trail, British Columbia) also found their way into the scoring column with their first goals of the season while K.J. Tiefenwerth (Bellmore, New York) and Chase Priskie (Pembroke Pines, Florida) both converted on their second assists in as many games. Quinnipiac goalie Michael Garteig (Prince George, British Columbia) stopped 16 of Holy Cross' 18 shots-on-goal for his 48th career win.
Jonzzon's first goal of the season came off a rebound on a shot by Aldworth that caromed off the leg of Holy Cross' Tommy Nixon and sat in the face-off circle to his left. Jonzzon collected the puck and wristed a shot top-shelf to give Quinnipiac an early 1-0 lead.
Aldworth got on the board after winning a battle in front of Nixon and pushing the past the Crusaders' goalie to break a 1-1 tie in the second. Clifton knocked the puck loose from a scrum in the corner over to Tiefenwerth . Tiefenwerth attempted the wrap-around but was pushed wide and sent the puck across the crease. The big-bodied Aldworth made room for himself above the crease to grab the puck and deposit it into the Holy Cross goal.
On the power play, Priskie set up the Bobcats third goal when he knocked down a clear attempt by Holy Cross just below the blue line along the boards in front of the Bobcats' bench. Priskie found Landon Smith (Greenwood Village, Colorado) slide between two defenders and put the puck on his stick. Smith then moved to the left of Nixon and zipped a pass to Clifton on the doorstep to set up the Bobcats' third tally of the night.
For Holy Cross, T.J. Moore scored Holy Cross' first goal before setting up Mike Barrett on the Crusaders' second goal. Clifton scored again late in the third period, once-again on the power play. Aldworth held the puck along the goal line to the right of Nixon before feeding Anas at the point. Anas – wide open between the face-off circles – unleashed a blast on goal. St. Denis, with Clifton screening the goalie, managed to get a stick on the puck and re-direct it past Nixon to give the Bobcats a 4-2 lead.
Quinnipiac returns to action on Thurday, Oct. 16 when it hosts Arizona State for a non-conference match-up at High Point Solutions Arena at the TD Bank Sports Center at 7 p.m.
