HAMDEN, Conn. - Quinnipiac men's ice hockey junior Soren Jonzzon (Mountain View, California) scored the game-winner in overtime as the No. 15 Bobcats defeated Dartmouth, 2-1, to improve to 10-4-1 overall and 6-1-0 in ECAC Hockey. Dartmouth drops to 4-4-1 overall and 2-4-1 in ECAC Hockey.
Jonzzon's fourth goal of the season came off a tip in front the Dartmouth goal after freshman Bo Pieper (Roseville, Minnesota) blasted a shot from the point. With the goal, Quinnipiac wins its second straight overtime game as they go to 2-0-1 in extra time this year. Quinnipiac's win against Dartmouth is it's sixth straight win against the Big Green.
Landon Smith (Greenwood Village, Colorado) scored his seventh goal of the season to tie the game to extend his team-leading scoring streak to four games. Smith now has seven goals through the first 15 games of his collegiate career, which is good for the second most among all NCAA Division I men's ice hockey freshmen. Devon Toews (Abbotsford, British Columbia) had two assists in the Bobcats' win.
Dartmouth's Tyler Sikura gave the Big Green a lead in the second period when he batted a puck out of mid-air past Quinnipiac goalie Michael Garteig (Prince George, British Columbia) to take a 1-0 lead. Rich Pinkton started the play in the Bobcats neutral zone and fed Eric Robinson at center ice. Robinson attempted a pass that was blocked by a Quinnipiac skater, sending the puck airborne. Sakura moved down ice and slapped at the puck from the slot for the highlight-reel goal.
The goal was the only blemish on another-wise brilliant performance by Garteig, who turned back 19 of Dartmouth's 20 total shots on goal. Garteig improves to 9-4-0 on the year including a 6-1-0 mark against ECAC Hockey competition. His counterpart, Dartmouth's James Kruger had 32 saves in the loss.
Early in the third, Smith scored the equalizer when Sam Anas (Potomac, Maryland) picked up a loosed puck from in front of Garteig, skated toward the Quinnipiac bench and cleared it off the glass. Smith touched the puck before poking it around a Dartmouth defender and over the blue line into the Big Green's defensive zone. Smith skated uncontested to the top of the face-off circle to Dartmouth goalie James Kruger's right before blasting the puck to the opposite corner to tie the game at 1-1.
Less than two minutes into the third period, Pieper took a pass from Toews, who gained control of the puck along the goal line and sent it up the boards to the point. Pieper, cocked and ready, fired the puck on goal where Jonzzon was waiting to screen the goalie, but was able to get his stick on the puck and tip it past Kruger for the game-winner.
Quinnipiac returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 6 when it hosts nationally-ranked No. 9 Harvard at 7 p.m. at High Point Solutions Arena at the TD Bank Sports Center.
