Quinnipiac erases 3-1 deficit to claim Connecticut crown
HARTFORD — The No. 7/8 Quinnipiac men's ice hockey program is Kings of Connecticut for the third consecutive season, roaring back from a 3-1 deficit to knock off UConn 4-3 in front of 6,429 fans at the XL Center in downtown Hartford.
UConn scored the lone goal in the opening frame but things got hectic in the second, with five goals in the middle 20 minutes; three goals to the Bobcats and a pair to the Huskies.
Mason Marcellus got Quinnipiac on the board, as Travis Treloar caused a turnover behind the net that allowed Marcellus to slot home a goal on an empty net.
18 seconds later, UConn would score shorthanded to take the lead and Matthew Wood would double the advantage just 2:09 later.
Quinnipiac flew back, however, as Southington native Victor Czerneckianair rifled home a shot from the high slot to cut the deficit in half.
Travis Treloar would score 54 seconds later, tying the proceeds on a beautiful passing play that he combined with Jayden Lee and Collin Graf to knot the game up at three apiece on.
Zach Tupker would provide the difference maker, firing a perfect wrister into the top shelf just 28 seconds into the third to give the Bobcats all they would need.
Vinny Duplessis, the tournament's Most Outstanding Player, made 28 saves in net, with 22 coming in the final 40 minutes. That also included multiple point-blank stops late that kept the defending champs ahead.
STATS AND NOTES
The Bobcats return to league action next weekend, when they play host to Harvard and Dartmouth at M&T Bank Arena. Puck drop is slated for 7 p.m., on both nights and you can watch the games live on ESPN+.
