Bobcats' Comeback Held Off by Kent State in Mid-Major Battle

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – In what proved to be a true battle of two mid-major programs, Kent State came out on top in the City Classic opener over Quinnipiac, 58-55, on Saturday afternoon inside of Stabler Arena, the home of the Lehigh Mountain Hawks.
Tabbed No. 17 in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Poll, Kent State improved to 3-2 with the win, while No. 12 Kent State fell to 2-3 with the loss. Senior forward Cur'Tiera Haywood led the Bobcats with 13 points, while senior guard Makenzie Helms added 10 points of her own. Mary Baskerville and Rose Caverly contributed eight points apiece in the loss.
With the score tied at 2-2 3:20 into the contest the Bobcats went on a 13-4 run to take a 15-6 lead in the frame, before carrying a 16-11 lead into the second quarter. After the Golden Flashes cut their deficit to 16-14, Quinnipiac responded with an 8-4 run to take a 24-18 run lead with 3:13 remaining in the half. However, Kent State held the Bobcats scoreless the rest of the quarter, tying the contest at 24-24 entering the break.
Kent State used the opening 3:34 of the second half to go on a 9-2 run to force a Quinnipiac timeout trailing 33-26 with 6:26 left in the frame. Trailing 36-30 in the quarter, the Bobcats outscored the Golden Flashes 14-11 the rest of the quarter, behind seven points from Haywood to enter the fourth trailing 47-44.
The Bobcats were never able to get over the hump, as the Golden Flashes never relinquished the lead in the fourth quarter. Quinnipiac was able to cut the deficit to as close as three points, but eventually fell short, 58-55.
