Bobcats Return to ECAC Hockey Play in Three-Game Series vs the Saints

HAMDEN, Conn. - The Quinnipiac women's ice hockey team is set to host the St. Lawrence Saints this weekend for a three-game series at the People's United Center. The Bobcats were originally scheduled to face the Colgate Raiders, but that series has been now pushed to Feb. 26-27 at home. Quinnipiac holds a 7-3-0 overall record and 1-3 ECAC record, and the Saints will come to Hamden with an 0-3 overall record and 0-2 record in ECAC play. Saturday, Feb. 13 is also the team's annual DIFD Game, in which the Bobcats spread awareness and raise funds for mental health initiatives. Click here to donate! Last Time Out
The Bobcats host the Sacred Heart Pioneers on Feb. 6 and won 6-0. Six different Bobcats scored goals in the win, and two skaters tallied a three-point performance – first-year Maddy Samoskevich and senior Taylor Girard. The first-years netted goals in the shutout win, including Nina Steigauf, Kendall Cooper and Olivia Mobley. In addition, 11 Bobcats tallied assists in the win.
First-year netminder Catie Boudiette and sophomore Allie Kelley split time between the pipes and made seven saves total. Quinnipiac held the Pioneers to just seven shots on net, which is a season low and lowest number recorded since the 2015-16 season when the Bobcats allowed just three shots against vs Brown on Oct. 30, 2015.
Scouting St. Lawrence
The Saints come to Hamden with an 0-3 overall record after facing Colgate and Clarkson this season. St. Lawrence most recently took No. 5/5 Colgate to overtime in back-to-back games, but fell short in both. In the second overtime game, Colgate outlasted St. Lawrence with just one goal scored in overtime after both teams skated for 60 minutes without scoring any goals. The Raiders one goal scored against the Saints was the lowest goal total for the entire season.
Rachel Bjorgan leads the Saints with three points, and five different Saints have tallied points so far this season. Lucy Morgan has played in 145:02 minutes for the Saints between the pipes and has recorded a 2.07 goals against average with a .946 save percentage. Morgan made 72 saves for the Saints in the overtime losses against Colgate.
Last Time Against the Saints
It has been almost exactly one year since the Bobcats last took on the Saints. Quinnipiac traveled to Canton, N.Y., on Feb. 15, 2020 to play St. Lawrence. The Bobcats came off an exciting win against Clarkson the day before, but ended up dropping a 3-2 contest at St. Lawrence. Taylor House and Kenzie Prater '19 scored in the loss.
Adzija & Saltness on a Roll
Junior Lexie Adzija and senior Renee Saltness are leading the Bobcats on the offensive end. Adzija and Saltness have scored or assisted in all but one game this season, and when the pair does score or assist in a game, the Bobcats are 7-2 overall. They both scored against the Golden Knights in the Bobcats' last conference series. Adzija leads the team with 14 points on six goals and eight assists. Saltness has recorded six goals and seven assists for 13 points this season, which is a career high. Both forwards have double-digit on-ice ratings and two game-winning goals together.
Girard Picking Up Apples
Senior Taylor Girard recorded three assists to lead the team against Sacred Heart last weekend. The forward has 10 points on three goals and seven assists this season.
Watch Out for Angers
Redshirt sophomore netminder Logan Angers has been named to the new Women's Hockey Goalie of the Year Award watch list. She is one of just two netminders from the ECAC to be selected to the watch list. A total of 21 goalies were chosen from across the country.
Markey Making Moves On and Off the Ice
Senior forward Grace Markey has been nominated for the 2021 Hockey Humanitarian Award. She is one of just six collegiate hockey players, male or female, to be nominated. Markey is the team's community service representative and is one of the community service leaders on campus. The senior has recorded three goals and three assists for six points this season.
A First for Mobes
First-year Olivia Mobley netted her first career goal as a Bobcat in the 6-0 win vs Sacred Heart last weekend. Mobley has one goal and two assists this season for three points.
Defensive Duo
First years Maddy Samoskevich and Kendall Cooper have been stellar as a defensive pair throughout the season. Cooper and Samoskevich both have eight points on the season, with two game-winning goals and double-digit on-ice percentages. They are tied for fifth in the nation in defensive scoring, averaging 1.00 point per game. Cooper is second in the nation for defensemen goals with four on the season.

The Bobcats still holds one of the top scoring offenses in the nation, averaging 4.70 goals per game, which is the second-best in the nation. In addition, Quinnipiac is holding opponents to 1.40 goals per game, which is fifth-best in the country.

Quinnipiac has recorded just 57 PIM this season through 10 games (5.7 PIM/G), which is ranked as the third lowest PIM/G in the country just in front of Wisconsin and UConn.

Colgate holds the top spot in the conference with 16 points (6-2), and Clarkson sits in second place with 10 points (3-3). St. Lawrence and Quinnipiac both have two points after playing just two and four conference games, respectively. St. Lawrence and Quinnipiac have some ground to make up in regards to games played after some COVID-19 protocols took effect over the last two weekends.
Mental Heath Awareness Game | DIFD
This weekend vs the Saints, the Bobcats will be kicking off a month-long campaign to help spread awareness about mental health and raise money for mental health initiatives on Quinnipiac's campus. The Bobcats will play in the "Do it For Daron" (DIFD) game on Saturday, Feb. 13. The social media fund raising campaign will also begin this weekend. The DIFD game has been happening at Quinnipiac for over five years. The first DIFD game was on Jan. 30, 2015. The Bobcats became invovled with DIFD through Cydney Roesler, who was close friends with the family of Daron Richardson, who committed suicide in Nov. 2010. Daron was the sister of Cornell alum Morgan Richardson. The organization aims to raise awareness for mental health and the funds raised will go to mental health initiatives on campus.
