#10/10 Men's Ice Hockey Can't Overcome Deficit in 4-2 Loss at Golden Knights
POTSDAM, N.Y. – Ty Smilanic (Denver, Colorado) and Guus van Nes (Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht, Netherlands) each scored goals Sunday evening but the No. 10/10 Quinnipiac men's ice hockey team came up short against the No. 14/14 Clarkson Golden Knights, 4-2, at Cheel Arena in the final meeting of the two teams in the 2020-21 regular season.
The Golden Knights scored four unanswered goals in the first and second periods to give themselves a three-goal lead that the Bobcats could not overcome as their six-game unbeaten streak came to an end. The Bobcats are now 10-5-3 on the season while Clarkson improved to 9-6-3, and both teams are 4-3-3 in ECAC Hockey play.
Smilanic got the scoring started midway through the first period with his 11th goal of the season to take sole possession of second in the nation. The Bobcats showed off some sharp passing on a power play before Smilanic one-timed home the power-play goal.
Clarkson followed Smilanic's goal with a power-play goal of their own less than four minutes later from Grant Cooper before Michael Underwood tallied a goal in the final minutes of the period to take the lead for good.
Anthony Romano and Anthony Callin each scored goals in the second period to get Clarkson out to a three-goal lead.
van Nes attempted to start a comeback for the Bobcats early in the third period as he buried a wide open goal in the slot to pull back within two goals but Quinnipiac could not complete the comeback.
The Bobcats outshot the Golden Knights 39-26, included a 15-5 advantage as they turned up the heat in the third period and skated the final 2:36 with an empty net trying to find that extra spark late in the game.

- (10:51, 1st period – PP) – Quinnipiac 1, Clarkson 0: Early in the Bobcats' first power play of the game, Smilanic fired home his 11th goal of the season. Zach Metsa (Delafield, Wisconsin) walked the puck to the point and swung it to Odeen Tufto (Chaska, Minnesota) on his left where he quickly passed it to Smilanic for a one-timer in the slot.
- (14:39, 1st period – PP) – Quinnipiac 1, Clarkson 1: Zach Tsekos kept the puck in the offensive zone as Quinnipiac tried to clear the puck and found Anthony Callin who hit Grant Cooper alone in the high slot where he wristed the puck over Keith Petruzzelli's (Wilbraham, Massachusetts) glove to tie the game 12 seconds into the power play.
- (17:06, 1st period - DP) – Quinnipiac 1, Clarkson 2: Mathieu Gosselin collected the puck to the left of the net after Jack Jacome was tripped up and Gosselin his Michael Underwood with a pass just above the right circle. Underwood skated in a few strides before wristing the puck through traffic past Petruzzelli's blocker side.
- (2:17, 2nd period) – Quinnipiac 1, Clarkson 3: Anthony Romano carried the puck into the offensive zone on a rush and had the puck knocked away and picked up by Jacome at the point. Romano skated into the left circle and waited for a one-timer from Jacome that he fired off a defender's leg trying to block the shot to beat a screened Petruzzelli
- (14:33, 2nd period – PP) – Quinnipiac 1, Clarkson 4: Clarkson scored its fourth unanswered goal late in the second period on the power play as Connor McCarthy had a blast from the left point blocked in front and Anthony Callin pounced on the rebound to blast the puck past a sprawling Petruzzelli.
- (3:12, 3rd period) – Quinnipiac 2, Clarkson 4: Metsa prevented a Clarkson rim from leaving the Quinnipiac offensive zone and tipped the puck down to Ethan de Jong (north Vancouver, British Columbia) in the right circle. After bringing it to his forehead, de Jong spun and found van Nes behind the defense in slot and buried the top shelf tally over Ethan Haider's glove.
- Smilanic scored his first goal since last Sunday for his 11th tally of the season and fourth on the power play.
- Smilanic now has sole possession of second in the nation with 11 goals while his four power-play goals are tied for seventh, and fourth among rookies.
- van Nes found the back of the net for his second of the season and 10th point.
- He scored a goal for the first time since the first game of the season
- van Nes also tied his career-high with two goals with his goal
- Metsa registered a pair of assists for his fifth multi-point game of the season Sunday
- With his two assists, Metsa now has a career-high 14 assists in 2020-21 and tied his career-high with 17 points
- Tufto recorded his first point of the weekend with an assist for his 24th assists and 28th point, both totals still far and away the best in the nation.
- With his assist, Tufto moved past Brian Herbert '03 for sole possession of third in program history with 114 assists and now has 149 points, passing Reid Cashman '07 for eighth in program history and third in Division I program history.
- de Jong recorded a point for the second straight game with an assist on van Nes' goal.
- de Jong's assist was his seventh of the season and 33rd of his career.
- He now has six points in 10 ECAC Hockey games this season.
- Sunday marked the final meeting of the regular season between the two teams as they finished 2-2-2 against one another.
- Quinnipiac will return to ECAC Hockey play after a weekend off when the Bobcats host the St. Lawrence Saints in a two-game series on Friday, Feb. 5 and Saturday, Feb. 6 with puck drop set for 7 p.m. both nights at Frank Perrotti Jr. Arena.
