HAMDEN, Conn. - The No. 16/15 Quinnipiac men's ice hockey team kicks off its 2019-20 men's ice hockey rivalry series with the Yale Bulldogs beginning Friday night on the road at Ingalls Rink with puck drop set for 7 p.m.
Following Friday night's showdown, the Bobcats will travel to Providence, Rhode Island, to take on the Brown Bears at Meehan Auditorium.
Last Time Out
Quinnipiac picked up a big weekend sweep last weekend to fly up the rankings. The Bobcats shut out the No. 1/1 Cornell Big Red, 5-0, before taking down the Colgate Raiders, 2-1, to cap off the sweep. Keith Petruzzelli allowed just one goal and was one of the top goaltenders in the nation while Nick Jermain had two goals and an assist Friday night against the Big Red.

Scouting Yale
The Bulldogs struggled to start the season but have played better as of late, going 3-2-1 over their last six games. Yale picked up one point last weekend in ECAC Hockey play, falling at Clarkson before tying St. Lawrence, 2-2. Curtis Hall has had a stellar season, scoring 13 goals and is tied for the team-lead with Justin Pearson and Tyler Welsh with 15 points. Defenseman Jack St. Ivany leads the team with 12 assists and has 13 points. Senior Corbin Kaczperski has seen the bulk of the action between the pipes as he has an 8-9-1 record with a 2.92 GAA and .900 save percentage. Yale's power play has been solid at 18.5 percent but the penalty kill has struggled at 76.9 percent.

All-Time vs. Yale
Quinnipiac has had a great deal of success against Yale, owning the all-time series with the Bulldogs, 22-7-5. The Bobcats have won four straight games against the Bulldogs over the past two seasons, and have a 12-1-3 record in the last 16 matchups since the beginning of the 2013-14 season.

Scouting Brown
Brown has struggled in 2019-20 after reaching the ECAC Hockey Semifinals last season. Despite winning two of their last three games, the Bears are just 5-16 on the season with all five wins coming in ECAC Hockey play. Brown snapped a 10-game losing streak with a win against Union on Jan. 18 before following it up last weekend with a win at St. Lawrence before losing at Clarkson. Justin Jallen has been one of the bright spots for Brown this season with nine goals to lead the team as well as 12 assists. Zach Giuttari and Tony Stillwell are tied for the team lead with seven assists. Senior Gavin Nieto has started 17 of Brown's 21 games this season, going 4-13 with a 2.67 GAA and .909 save percentage.

All-Time vs. Brown
Despite the Bears winning three of the four matchups last season, the Bobcats still own the all-time series between the two teams with a 24-10-6 record in 40 meetings. Quinnipiac and Brown split the regular season series with the road team winning each matchup before the Bears swept the ECAC Hockey Quarterfinal matchup.

National Rankings
The Bobcats climbed up the national rankings after sweeping last weekend's ECAC Hockey series with Cornell and Colgate. Quinnipiac went up two spots in the USCHO Poll from 18 to 16 while the Bobcats also cracked the Top 15 of the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Poll for the first time since October. Quinnipiac also put itself back in position to compete for an NCAA Tournament At-Large berth, rising to No. 14 in the Pairwise Rankings.

Weekly Awards
Keith Petruzzelli was rewarded for his dominant weekend between the pipes as he was named the ECAC Hockey Goaltender of the Week for the second time in his career and was named the NCAA Ice Hockey First Star of the Week for the first time. Quinnipiac has now had six weekly awards this season while Petruzzelli is the only Bobcat to win one twice.

Down Goes #1
Quinnipiac shut out the nation's No. 1 team for a second straight season with its 5-0 win over No. 1 Cornell. Last season, Quinnipiac knocked out No. 1 UMass the previous season, 4-0, at Frank Perrotti Jr. Arena. With this season's victory, Quinnipiac improved to 2-1 against the nation's top teams.

All-Time Great
With two wins last weekend, head coach Rand Pecknold recorded his 527th career victory to pass former men's and women's tennis head coach Mike Quitko for the most wins by a coach in Quinnipiac Athletics history. Pecknold and Quitko are the only two Quinnipiac coaches to record 500 wins with Quinnipiac programs. His 527 wins rank 11th all-time among NCAA Division I Men's Head Coaches and 24th among all NCAA Men's Hockey Head Coaches regardless of division.

Face/Off
Quinnipiac remains one of the top faceoff teams in the nation with a .553 faceoff percentage, good for third in the nation behind only Minnesota State (.561) and Western Michigan (.555). The Bobcats have three players ranked in the top 43 in the nation in faceoff percentage led by William Fällström in 25th at .582. Quinnipiac joins Minnesota State and UMass Lowell as the only teams in the nation with three players ranked in the top 43 in faceoffs.

Penalties (or lack thereof)
Quinnipiac continues to be extremely disciplined as it is fourth in the nation among the last penalized times with 85 penalties, a total that is first among non-Ivy League teams. The Bobcats average the fewest penalties per game in the nation at 3.27, 0.14 ahead of Brown. In at least Division I program history, no Quinnipiac team has averaged fewer penalties or fewer penalty minutes per game than the 2019-20 squad.
