de Jong Scores Game-Winning Goal with 5:47 Left in Third Period
HAMDEN, Conn. – Ethan de Jong (North Vancouver, British Columbia) scored the game-winning goal with 5:47 remaining in the third period Friday night as the No. 17 Quinnipiac men's ice hockey team took down the Brown Bears, 2-1, at Frank Perrotti Jr. Arena.
With the win and Harvard's loss to Rensselaer, the Bobcats clinched the No. 3 seed in the ECAC Hockey Tournament and a first round bye.
With the win, the Bobcats also won 20 games in a season for the 18th time in Rand Pecknold's 26 seasons as the helm of the program.
Wyatt Bongiovanni (Birmingham, Michigan) tipped home his 14th goal of the season to get the Bobcats on the board with 8:42 left in the first period and take a 1-0 lead.
Brown tied the game just 1:05 into the second period but the Bobcats held strong on the play of Keith Petruzzelli (Wilbraham, Massachusetts) between the pipes. Petruzzelli made his biggest save of the game as he denied a one-timer on top of the slot with just 1:27 remaining in the period.
de Jong connected with an impressive redirect in front of the net with 5:47 left in the third period to send the Bobcat faithful home happy after William Fällström (Stockholm, Sweden) made an impressive move to get around a defender before putting the puck on net.
The Bobcats improved to 5-2-1 in February and are now 11-4-1 in the 2020 calendar year.

- (11:18, 1st period) – Quinnipiac 1, Brown 0: Bongiovanni got the Bobcats on the board just past the midway point of the first period as Nick Jermain (Norwalk, Connecticut) hit Odeen Tufto (Chaska, Minnesota) at the point with a pass and Tufto one-timed a shot on a net that was redirected by Bongiovanni.
- (1:05, 2nd period) – Quinnipiac 1, Brown 1: Joachim Weberg evened up the game early in the second period on an odd-man rush as Brent Beaudoin worked it across to Trey Dodd streaking down the right side of the ice before Dodd hit Weberg to his left for the back-door goal.
- (14:13, 3rd period) – Quinnipiac 2, Brown 1: de Jong scored the game-winning goal with 5:47 to go in the third period as William Fällström (Stockholm, Sweden) deked past a Brown defender and made a couple moves before backhanding the puck on net and de Jong tipped home the game-winner between Brown goaltender Gavin Nieto's legs.

NOTES
- Quinnipiac picked up its 20th win of the season with Friday night's win, good for its 18th 20-win season in the Rand Pecknold era.
- The Bobcats clinched a first round bye in the ECAC Hockey tournament for a second straight season and has now received a first round bye in six of the last eight seasons.
- Quinnipiac was dominant once again at the faceoff dot as they won 34 of the 58 faceoffs, led by Fällström's 12 for 17 night.
- Bongiovanni's goal in the first period was his 14th of the season, tied with last season for a career-high.
- His 14 goals are also tied for fourth in ECAC Hockey.
- de Jong found the back of the net for the seventh time this season, tied for fourth on the team, while the goal was also his first game-winning goal of the season.
- Tufto picked up an assist for his 30th of the season, his second 30-assist season in his Quinnipiac career.
- Tufto is the first Bobcat since Bryan Leitch '08 and Reid Cashman '07 to record at least two 30-point seasons in a career, and they are the only three Bobcats to achieve the feat at the Division I level.
- Jermain tallied his first multi-assist game of the season and second multi-point game of the year with two assists.
- Friday marked his first two-assist game since he had three assists at Dartmouth on Jan. 12, 2018.
- His pair of assists also give him 20 points in a season for the first time in his career and Quinnipiac now has five 20-point scorers.
- Fällström recorded his 16th assist of the season as he continues to set a career-best as a sophomore while his 12 faceoff wins boosted his faceoff percentage to .610 which ranks seventh in the nation and fourth among centers.
- Petruzzelli made 17 saves on 18 shots to earn 20 wins in a season for the first time in his career, making him just the fourth Quinnipiac goaltender to win at least 20 games in a season in the Division I era and seventh different occasion.
- He is the first Bobcat netminder to reach the mark since Michael Garteig '16 won 32 games during the 2015-16 season.
- Petruzzelli lowered his GAA to 2.08 on the season as he allowed just the one goal and owns an impressive 1.83 GAA against ECAC Hockey competition.
- The Bobcats close out the 2019-20 regular season Saturday night with the 18th annual Heroes' Hat Game against the Yale Bulldogs with puck drop set for 7 p.m.
