Bobcats Win First-Ever ECAC Hockey Shootout for Extra League Point
CANTON, N.Y. – Ty Smilanic (Denver, Colorado) scored the game-tying, extra-attacker goal with 2:39 remaining in the third period Thursday night as the No. 12/13 Quinnipiac men's ice hockey team closed out the 2020 calendar year with a 2-2 tie at St. Lawrence.
The Bobcats picked up an extra point in the ECAC Hockey standings as Odeen Tufto (Chaska, Minnesota) scored the only goal in the shootout, the first shootout in ECAC Hockey history.
Tufto finished the game with another two-point night with a goal and an assist while Smilanic's goal extended his scoring streak to three games. Ethan de Jong (North Vancouver, British Columbia) extended his own point streak to six games with an assist in the win.
St. Lawrence scored early in the first period on a tough angle goal and held a 1-0 lead into the third period. The Bobcats peppered the Saints with 15 shots in the second period before breaking through with Tufto's goal 6:08 into the third period.
The Saints regained the lead midway through the third period before Smilanic tied the game with the extra-attacker goal, the Bobcats' first Nov. 1, 2019, at Arizona State. Petruzzelli headed to the bench with 2:55 left in the period before Smilanic finished 16 seconds later to tie the game.
Petruzzelli finished the night with 23 saves on 25 shots, including an impressive 10 saves in the first period as he held the Saints to just one goal.

- (3:42, 1st period) – Quinnipiac 0, St. Lawrence 1: The Saints scored the game's first goal early in the first period as Kaden Pickering collected a loose puck in the right corner and worked the puck to Greg LaPoint along the end line where he banked the shot of Petruzzelli's shoulder from a tough angle.
- (6:08, 3rd period) – Quinnipiac 1, St. Lawrence 1: Ethan Leyh controlled a turnover in the left corner where he spun and fired a pass to Tufto low in the left circle where he hesitated and ripped a wrister past Emil Zetterquist's glove
- (9:53, 3rd period) – Quinnipiac 1, St. Lawrence 2: Cameron Buhl answered minutes later for the Saints to reclaim a 2-1 lead as he skated across the slot in front of Petruzzelli to redirect a shot from Tim Makowski from the left point.
- (17:21, 3rd period – EA) – Quinnipiac 2, St. Lawrence 2: With Petruzzelli pulled and the extra attacker on the ice, Smilanic fired a pass across the zone to Tufto at the top of the left circle. Tufto surveyed his options before going back to Smilanic on the back door where he rocketed home a one-timer to tie the game.
- Quinnipiac won the first-ever shootout in ECAC Hockey history as Tufto put home the shootout win in the third round.
- Smilanic's extra-attacker goal was the Bobcats first since since Guus van Nes (Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht, Netherlands) scored one in a 5-3 loss at Arizona State on Nov. 1, 2019.
- Tufto extended his point streak to six games, and recorded his third straight multi-point game, with a goal and an assist
- He now has 42 multi-point games in his career
- Tufto extended his nation-leading point total to 17 along with 14 assists
- Smilanic scored a goal for a third straight game and fourth time in the last five games with the game-tying goal
- He is now fourth in the nation among rookies in goals with six this season, and takes over the team lead
- de Jong extended his point streak to six games with an assist on Tufto's goal Thursday night, his fifth helper of the season and 10th point in nine games
- Leyh picked up his first point since the first game of the season as he assisted Tufto's goal, tying his career-high with three assists this season
- Jayden Lee (North Vancouver, British Columbia) recorded his second assist in three games
- Petruzzelli continued to dominate between the pipes as he made 23 saves on the 25 shots he faced, maintaining a 1.83 GAA and .932 save percentage.
- Quinnipiac men's ice hockey returns to Frank Perrotti Jr. Arena Sunday afternoon as the Bobcats and Saints will meet in a matinee matchup with puck drop set for 1 p.m.
