Tufto and Metsa Net Extra-Attacker Goals as Men's Ice Hockey Comes Up Short
HAMDEN, Conn. – The No. 12/13 Quinnipiac men's ice hockey team scored a pair of extra-attacker goals in the final 3:42 of regulation Sunday afternoon but the Bobcats could not overcome an early deficit and fell to the St. Lawrence Saints, 4-2, at Frank Perrotti Jr. Arena.
Trailing 2-0, the Bobcats went on the power-play with 4:53 remaining in the third after a Jake Stevens cross-checking penalty. The Bobcats pulled goaltender Keith Petruzzelli (Wilbraham, Massachusetts) following the media timeout for the six-on-four advantage.
After three shots saved and a shot from Peter DiLiberatore (Bedford, Nova Scotia) that rung off the post, the Bobcats finally converted to pull within 2-1 as Odeen Tufto (Chaska, Minnesota) carried a pass from Zach Metsa (Delafield, Wisconsin) and fired it through traffic for the extra-attacker, power-play goal.
St. Lawrence regained its two-goal lead as Quinnipiac opted for the extra attacker again later in the third but the Bobcats scored a second extra-attacker goal with 1:04 remaining in the third period to pull back within a goal at 3-2.
Tufto won a faceoff back to DiLiberatore who carried the puck into the high slot but his shot was blocked by a St. Lawrence defender. The puck lay loose in the left faceoff circle and Metsa chased it down and beat St. Lawrence goaltender Emil Zetterquist high glove-side.
The Bobcats could not come up with the equalizer as Petruzzelli remained on the bench after Metsa's goal and the Saints' Justin Paul flipped an empty-net goal from his own defensive zone.
Tufto recorded his fourth straight multi-point game with a goal and an assist and extended his point streak to seven games in the loss. He continued to lead the nation with 15 assists and 19 points on the season.
Metsa also recorded a two-point game with a goal and an assist, his third multi-point effort of the season, while DiLiberatore had a pair of assists in the game for the fifth time this season.
