HAMDEN, Conn. – The No. 16 Quinnipiac men's ice hockey team is halfway through its stretch of eight hockey games in 14 days as the Bobcats begin a home-and-home series with the Holy Cross Crusaders Tuesday night at Frank Perrotti Jr. Arena before heading to Worcester Wednesday night.
Last Time Out
Quinnipiac hosted then-No. 12/13 Bowling Green in a weekend series at Frank Perrotti Jr. Arena in which the Falcons took both games, 4-1 and 4-2. Keith Petruzzelli made 67 saves on the weekend to lead the Bobcats between the pipes. Nick Bochen picked up his second goal of the season in game one before Ethan de Jong and Desi Burgart each scored their first goals of the season on Saturday.
Scouting Holy Cross
The Crusaders come into the weekend with a 4-2-0 record and have one back-to-back games against Sacred Heart and Bentley, and come into this weekend after a 13-day layoff. Alex Peterson leads the Crusaders with three goals, four assists and seven points while Logan Ferguson and Jake Pappalardo each are tied with Peterson for the team lead with three goals. Goaltender Erik Gordon has seen the bulk of the action between the pipes as he owns a 2.19 GAA and .907 save percentage to go with his 4-1-0 record and 107 saves in five games.
All-Time vs. Holy Cross
Quinnipiac has been dominant against Holy Cross in their 34 all-time meetings as they own a 25-5-4 record after last season's 4-3 win at Holy Cross. The Bobcats are unbeaten against the Crusaders in their last 11 games dating back to the 2006-07 season. Quinnipiac has won eight straight games against Holy Cross as they will meet in Hamden for the first time in two seasons.
Stars of the Week
Zach Metsa was named the ECAC Hockey First Star of the Week and Keith Petruzzelli earned the league's Second Star of the Week honors after spectacular starts to the 2020 season. Metsa's honor was the first weekly honor of his career from the league office while Petruzzelli was honored for a fourth time after securing three goaltender of the week awards in 2019-20.
National Rankings
Quinnipiac fell in the national rankings after a couple tough losses to Bowling Green as the Bobcats dropped to No. 16 in the USCHO.com Poll and are receiving votes in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Poll.
Not Metsing Around
Metsa picked up points with assists in both games against Bowling Green to give him points in each of the first four games to open the 2020-21 season. He now has a five-game point streak dating back to the Bobcats 5-0 win over Yale on Feb. 29. Since the start of the Bobcats season last Monday, Metsa has recorded the most points and assists in the nation with seven points on a goal and six assists.
In addition to his work on the offensive end, Metsa has been among the most consistent defensively as well as he is tied for second on the team with seven blocked shots.
Keith Keeps Us In
Petruzzelli has gotten off to a stellar start in 2020-21, and was spectacular against Bowling Green despite a pair of losses. He recorded 67 saves over the two games, including a 35-save performance in the opening game of the weekend, just the third time in his career he's made 35-plus saves in a game. This past weekend also marked the first time Petruzzelli has made 30-plus saves in back-to-back games since the first two games of his Quinnipiac career. Since last Monday, Petruzzelli leads the nation with 101 saves and he owns a 2.06 GAA and .927 save percentage.
Bochen Bomb
Nick Bochen continues to shine for the Bobcats in the early in his Quinnipiac career as the first year picked up another goal against Bowling Green for his second of the season. Bochen scored on another one-timer from the "Priskie Spot," the location in the left faceoff circle where former Quinnipiac captain Chase Priskie '19 launched one-timers with his time on the power-play unit. Bochen is tied for third in the nation among first years over the past week with two goals.
Two-Way Threat
Desi Burgart picked up his first goal of the season Saturday night with a highlight reel goal for the Bobcats. It was his first goal since he netted a goal at AIC on Oct. 12, 2019. Burgart has also been stellar defensively and on the penalty kill as he leads the Bobcats with eight blocked shots, a total that is tied for fourth overall in the nation since last Monday and is second among forwards.
Power Tally
Ethan de Jong netted his first goal of the season with a power-play tally Saturday night that initially gave the Bobcats a 1-0 lead. It was just the third power-play goal of his career as the junior now has 18 total goals and 45 points through 76 games in his career.
Rising in the Rankings
Quinnipiac captain Odeen Tufto picked up the primary assist on de Jong's power-play goal for his fourth assist and fifth point of the season, both second on the team behind Metsa. Tufto moved into a tie for 20th all-time in program history, and sole possession of 15th in the Division I era, with his 126th career point. He also moved into a tie for ninth all-time in program history with 94 assists, tied with Bill Verneris '82, and is just six assists away from becoming the eighth player in program history with 100 career assists. He would be just the fifth to reach the mark at the Division I level.
A Helping Hand
Guus van Nes has had a solid start to his second season as a Bobcat as the Netherlands-native recorded his second assist of the season with an assist on Bochen's goal in game one against Bowling Green. van Nes now has a goal and two assists for three points through three games after recorded two goals and three assists for five points in his first season in 2019-20.
Shots, Shots, Shots
Despite being held off the scoresheet for the first times this season against Bowling Green, Wyatt Bongiovanni made his impact felt by firing 10 shots on goal, including a season-high seven in game two. Bongiovanni has paced the nation in shots on goal with 17 since the Bobcats season-opener last Monday, and has recorded over 100 shots on goal in each of his first two seasons.
Chorney Gets It Done
Marcus Chorney has made his impact felt on the blue line through his first four games of the 2020-21 season after playing just 15 games in his career heading into the season. After recording a goal and an assist in the season opener, Chorney has now picked up seven blocked shots to tie for second on the team, and first among defensemen for the Bobcats. He is also tied with Metsa for sixth in the nation since the Bobcats' season opener.
New Bobcats Make Their Debut
A couple of Bobcats made their Quinnipiac debuts over the weekend as transfer Joey Cipollone cracked the lineup for the first time on Friday before playing both games while newcomer Christophe Fillion played for the first time on Saturday. Despite not cracking the scoresheet, Cipollone tied for third on the team with four shots on goal, all of which were among the Bobcats best looks of the weekend.
