Bongiovanni Nets Overtime Winner to Beat Sacred Heart, 2-1

No. 11/11 Men's Ice Hockey Finishes Off Sweep of Pioneers with Goals from Bongiovanni and Smilanic
HAMDEN, Conn. – Wyatt Bongiovanni (Birmingham, Michigan) scored the first three-on-three overtime goal in Quinnipiac men's ice hockey history Tuesday night as the No. 11/11 Bobcats defeated Sacred Heart, 2-1, to complete a season-opening sweep of the Pioneers.
Odeen Tufto (Chaska, Minnesota) carried the puck from end-to-end and drew the Sacred Heart defenders, allowing Bongiovanni to sit alone on the back door where he one-timed the winner past Sacred Heart goaltender Josh Benson from the right faceoff circle to win the game with 2:41 remaining in the overtime period.
Bongiovanni's goal was his second in as many nights as the Bobcats assistant captain recorded his second multi-point effort with an assist earlier in the game.
Ty Smilanic (Denver, Colorado) scored the first goal of his collegiate career in the early stages of the first period on a breakaway starting in the neutral zone after a pass from Bongiovanni. Smilanic scored the goal as he was being hooked to draw a penalty on in addition to picking up his first goal.
Odeen Tufto (Chaska, Minnesota) recorded his second straight multi-point game with a pair of assists while Zach Metsa (Delafield, Wisconsin) notched his fourth helper of the season on Bongiovanni's game-winner.
Keith Petruzzelli (Wilbraham, Massachusetts) was solid between the pipes as he made several key saves throughout the night on his way to a 19-save effort for his second win of the year.
The defense also came up big in front of Petruzzelli with 12 blocked shots on the night.

- (7:04, 1st period) – Quinnipiac 1, Sacred Heart 0: Smilanic buried the first goal of his career on a breakaway after a scramble for the puck in the defensive zone and Wyatt Bongiovanni (Birmingham, Michigan) played the puck off the wall to Smilanic. Smilanic turned the jets on and beat a Pioneers defender who hooked him as he shot the puck to beat Sacred Heart's Josh Benson.
- (17:11, 3rd period) – Quinnipiac 1, Sacred Heart 1: The Pioneers tied the game late in the third period on a rush as Braeden Tuck buried a rebound high in the slot off a kick save by Petruzzelli on an Austin Magera shot on goal.
- (2:19, Overtime) – Quinnipiac 2, Sacred Heart 1: The play started behind the Bobcats net as Tufto skated the puck from end-to-end before drawing the defense to the left side of the offensive zone, allowing plenty of time and space for Bongiovanni on the back door to one-time home the OT winner.
- Bongiovanni extended his point streak to four games, dating back to the final two games of the 2019-20 season. He has also scored a goal in four straight games.
- Bongiovanni had a goal and an assist Tuesday night for his second straight multi-point game
- Smilanic's breakaway goal was his first of his career as well as the first point of his career
- Smilanic is the fourth different Bobcat through the first two games of the season to record his first career goal.
- Tufto extended his own point streak to five games after netting two assists Tuesday night for his second straight multi-point game.
- He now has 38 career multi-point games, while his two assists upped his career point total to 125, tied for the 15th most in Division I program history with Travis St. Denis '16.
- Tufto also dominated the faceoff dot as he was 17 for 24 on the night to lead all skaters and set an early season-high.
- Metsa also recorded an assist on Bongiovanni's winner for his fourth of the young season and fifth point through the first two games to extend his point streak to three games dating back to the 2019-20 season finale.
- Metsa also finished second on the team with three blocked shots Tuesday night while Desi Burgart (North Vancouver, British Columbia) led the way with four.
- Petruzzelli earned his second straight win to give him 36 in his career as he lowered his early GAA to 1.55.
- Quinnipiac kept Sacred Heart 20 or fewer shots for the second straight night, the first time the Bobcats have held an opponent to 20 or fewer shots in back-to-back games since the 2018-19 season on Feb. 16 and Feb. 22, 2019.
- The Bobcats have a quick turnaround as they are off for two days before returning to action with a two-game series in Hamden against the #12/13 Bowling Green Falcons Friday and Saturday. Puck drop Friday night is set for 7 p.m. with all of the action airing on ESPN+.
