HAMDEN, Conn. – The No. 5/6 Quinnipiac men's ice hockey team returns to Frank Perrotti Jr. Arena this weekend for the final home weekend of the 2018-19 regular season as the Bobcats host St. Lawrence on Friday night before taking on No. 12/13 Clarkson Saturday night.
Last Time Out
Quinnipiac recorded a crucial three-point weekend at Union and Rensselaer last weekend to pull within one point of Cornell for first in the ECAC Hockey standings. The Bobcats opened the weekend with a 1-1 tie at No. 20 Union before coming back to beat the Rensselaer Engineers on Saturday in a thrilling game at Houston Field House.
Scouting St. Lawrence
The Saints' struggles continue this season as they are winless in their last five games and have just one win in their last 15 games. St. Lawrence owns a 4-24-2 record on the season and 2-14-2 record in ECAC Hockey. St. Lawrence has played better as of late, allowing three goals per game or fewer since the Bobcats' 7-2 win back on Feb. 2. In the past weekend, the Saints held a lead against Harvard before falling, 3-2, followed by a 2-2 tie with Dartmouth. Carson Gicewicz leads the team with 12 assists and 15 points, putting him among the nine Saints with double-digit points. Freshman David Jankowski leads the team with seven goals on the season while four different Saints have scored five-plus goals this season. Emil Zetterquist has started the last four games and has made 10 starts this season, sporting a 3.78 GAA and .891 save percentage despite his 1-6-2 record.
All-Time vs. St. Lawrence
Quinnipiac is 14-15-4 in its 33 all-time meetings with St. Lawrence but have held the upper hand of late, winning five consecutive games against the Saints are a 5-2-1 since the beginning of the 2016-17 season. The Bobcats won the first meeting between the two teams this season, 7-2, behind a four-point night from Odeen Tufto.
Scouting Clarkson
The Golden Knights continue to be among the top teams in ECAC Hockey despite splitting each of the past four weekends. Since losing to the Bobcats, Clarkson is 3-2 with wins over Colgate, Harvard and Princeton and losses to Cornell and Dartmouth. On the season. Clarkson is 20-10-0 with an 11-7-0 record in league play to put them in a tie for fourth place. Nico Sturm paces Clarkson with 36 points and 24 assists on the season while Haralds Egle leads the team with 15 goals and joins Sturm as 30-point scorers. Four different Golden Knights have over 20 points this season and three have 10-plus goals. Jake Kielly continues his dominance between the pipes as he has a 1.92 GAA and .929 save percentage with 729 saves in 30 games this season.
All-Time vs. Clarkson
Quinnipiac is 16-11-3 all-time against Clarkson as the two teams head into their 31st all-time meeting. The two teams split the season series last year in 2017-18 with the home team winning each game. No team has swept the season series since the 2012-13 season when the Bobcats recorded both wins on the way to their first national championship game appearance. Quinnipiac won the first game of this season's series, 4-2, at Cheel Arena on Feb. 1 and is looking for that sweep.
North Country Sweep
In the Bobcats series up in the North Country earlier this season, Quinnipiac recorded its third-ever weekend sweep on the road at Clarkson and St. Lawrence and first since the 2012-13 season. Quinnipiac is looking for its first complete series sweep of Clarkson and St. Lawrence in program history.
National Polls
Quinnipiac remains entrenched in the top 10 of the national polls as the Bobcats are up to No. 5 in the USCHO.com Division I Men's Poll and No. 6 in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Poll. The Bobcats have been in the Top Six of either poll since Dec. 10 after beating then-No. 1 UMass.
Bracketology
In the latest bracketology from USCHO.com, the Bobcats are once again slated to go to Providence for the East Regional of the NCAA Tournament as the No. 6 overall seed, and No. 2 seed in the region. Quinnipiac's first round opponent is projected to be Providence, with UMass Lowell and Denver predicted to be the other matchup in the region.
Iron Man
In addition to being one of the Bobcats most dominant offensive weapons, Priskie is set to play in his 150th career game this weekend, making him just the 22nd player in program history to play in 150 games. Former teammates Bo Pieper '18 and Tanner MacMaster '18 reached the milestone last season, playing in 158 and 150 games, respectively. Priskie has also played with Travis St. Denis '16, whose 162 games is second all-time in program history.
Shorty's Smooth
The dominance between the pipes continues for Andrew Shortridge has he still leads the nation with his 1.28 GAA and .949 save percentage. He allowed just one goal in each game last weekend, giving him 12 games allowing one goal or fewer. If the season were to end today, Shortridge's .949 save percentage and 1.28 GAA would be the fourth-best in NCAA Ice Hockey history.
11 for 11
Wyatt Bongiovanni scored the Bobcats lone goal in a tie at No. 20 Union last weekend for his 11th of the season. He is tied for the ECAC Hockey lead with 11 goals on the season while his four power-play goals are second. Bongiovanni is also fourth in the league for 18 points after recording an assist in the win at Rensselaer. He has totaled 89 shots this season, averaging nearly three per game.
Top Offensive Defense
Quinnipiac's defense continues to put up impressive numbers offensively, still leading the nation in nearly every offensive category with 34 goals, 86 assists, 120 points, 1.13 goals per game, 2.87 assists per game, 4.00 points per game, 16 power-play goals, 41 power-play assists, 57 power-play points, 10 game-winning goals, 388 shots and 12.93 shots per game. Quinnipiac defenders have five more goals and 27 more points than the next closest team, UMass.
Top Rookie Scoring
As a class, the Quinnipiac freshmen are among the best in the nation in scoring as they lead the nation with 44 goals, 1.47 goals per game, 100 points, 3.33 points per game, nine game-winning goals, 381 shots and 12.70 shots on goal per game. The Bobcats are also second among all rookie classes with 56 assists and third with 1.87 assists per game.
