HAMDEN, Conn. — The Quinnipiac softball team fell behind early in both games of a doubleheader with MAAC-leading Monmouth and was unable to mount comebacks as it fell 8-0 and 7-3 on Sunday afternoon at Quinnipiac Softball Field.
With the losses, the Bobcats slip to 19-25 on the season and an even 7-7 in the MAAC, while Monmouth improves to 21-14 overall and 11-1 in league play.
Amber Riley threw a two-hit shutout in the opener for Monmouth, taking a no-hitter into the fifth inning before it was broken up on an infield single by senior pitcher Casey Herzog. Hawks shortstop Sam Tomasetti nearly came up with a great play to keep the no-hitter intact, leaping to get a glove on Herzog's line drive at full extension, but wasn't quite able to pull it in. The Hawks scored once in the second inning and twice in the third to give Riley all the offense she would need before breaking it open with four runs in the fifth.
Tomasetti then set the tone in the second game with a leadoff solo home run in the top of the first, and then added a second solo shot in the fifth to help the Hawks break out to a 7-0 lead. Quinnipiac put its first offensive rally together in the bottom of the fifth as senior catcher Lexi Courtney had a two-out, two-run double, and freshman second baseman Brighid Douglas drove Courtney in with an RBI single to close the gap to 7-3.
Quinnipiac tried to rally one last time in the bottom of the seventh, as senior first baseman Keala Cordeiro's infield single and an error put two runners on, but Riley closed out the seventh inning in relief with two strikeouts to help the Hawks finish off the sweep.
Cordeiro was 3-for-4 in the nightcap, while Courtney was 2-for-4 with two RBI after going 1-for-3 in the opener, making her the only Bobcat to reach base in both games. Katie Baron was 3-for-3 for Monmouth in the opener, while Tomasetti finished the day 4-for-7 with two homers and a triple.
Quinnipiac will be back in action on Saturday when it is back at home for a 12 p.m. doubleheader against Fairfield.
