QU Softball Drops Doubleheader to Fairfield at Home, 5-2 and 10-6

HAMDEN, Conn. — The Quinnipiac softball team fell behind in both games of a doubleheader with in-state MAAC rival Fairfield and was unable to mount comebacks as it fell 5-2 and 10-6 on Saturday afternoon at Quinnipiac Softball Field.
With the losses, the Bobcats slip to 19-27 on the season and 7-9 in the MAAC, while Fairfield improves to 21-24 overall and 11-5 in league play.
In game one, Fairfield's Destinee Pallotto edged Casey Herzog in a pitcher's duel to secure the 5-2 win for the Stags. Pallotto pitched a complete game and allowed two earned runs. Herzog also pitched a complete game, but all five runs scored against her were unearned.
Quinnipiac took a 1-0 lead after Lexi Courtney drilled an RBI triple to the fence to plate Brighid Douglas in the bottom of the second. However, Fairfield responded with four runs in the top of the third, powered by a Kate Robinson two-run home run to give Fairfield a 4-1 lead.
The Stags added another run in the top of the fifth, giving Quinnipiac a 5-1 deficit to face going into the seventh. Miranda Magana was able to reach on a one-out double and scored on a Rebecca Drake single to cut the score to 5-2 in the seventh. However, Quinnipiac was unable to score another run and fell 5-2.
In game two, Fairfield got on the board early, scoring five runs in the first three innings. Quinnipiac got on the board in the bottom of the third inning after Courtney drilled a two-run triple to right-center to cut the deficit to 5-2. Keala Cordeiro immediately followed with an RBI single to cut the Stags' lead to 5-3.
Fairfield added three more runs in the fourth and fifth innings to take an 8-3 lead to the bottom of the fifth. Quinnipiac kept up the fight, putting two on with two outs in the bottom of the fifth. Douglas delivered with an RBI single to cut the deficit to 8-4. Magana immediately followed with a two-run double to cut the Stags' lead to 8-6.
The runs weren't enough as Fairfield tacked on two more in the top of the sixth for insurance to hold on to the 10-6 victory.
Quinnipiac will be back in action on Tuesday, May 1, when the Bobcats play host to Sacred Heart at 3:30 p.m.
