ITHACA, N.Y.. – Second-ranked Cornell scored twice in the final two minutes of the first period to take a 3-1 lead, and then scored six times in the second period to pull away for a 9-1 win over the Quinnipiac men's ice hockey team in the first game of a best-of-three ECAC Quarterfinal series on Friday night at Lynah Rink. Quinnipiac's Tanner MacMaster scored on the power play with 7:07 left in the first to knot the score at 1-1, but the Big Red twice scored three times in a span of less than three minutes to take control.

1:47 1st period (Cornell 1, Quinnipiac 0): On the powe rplay, Cornell junior defenseman Alec McCrea drove a low slap shot from the point past Keith Petruzzelli to give the Big Red an early lead. Freshmen Brenden Locke and Cam Donaldson picked up assists on McCrea's fifth goal of the season.
12:53 1st period (Cornell 1, Quinnipiac 1): Tanner MacMaster deflected a slap shot from Karlis Cukste to even the game at 1-1. MacMaster's first power play goal of the season had a secondary assist from John Furgele.
18:08 1st period (Cornell 2, Quinnipiac 1): After a Cornell dump-in, the puck took a tough hop over Petruzzelli's stick, leaving Alex Rauter with a wide open net. Yanni Kaldis and McCrea earned the helpers.
19:19 1st period (Cornell 3, Quinnipiac 1): Jeff Malott scored on a snapshot through a screen after a feed from Jared Fiegl. Kaldis also tallied his second assist of the game.

NOTES

Tanner MacMaster's tying goal in the first period was his 13 of the season, but his first power play goal of the season.
MacMaster moved into second place on Quinnipiac's active ECAC Hockey Tournament scoring list with his first period goal, giving him 11 points (two goals, nine assists). Only Landon Smith (four goals, eight assists) has more points in ECAC Tournament play among active Bobcats.
Freshman Josh Mayanja made his first career appearance in goal in relief in the second period.
The Bobcats have lost the first game in an ECAC Tournament series nine times since 2006. They have gone 7-1 in game two the previous eight times.
The previous time that the Big Red won the first game of a playoff series against the Bobcats in 2013, Quinnipiac won the second game 10-0 and took the rubber game 3-2 in overtime.
