SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — The No. 11 Quinnipiac men's ice hockey program is back in the NCAA Tournament, set for an NCAA Regional Semifinal matchup with Providence on Thursday evening at the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center in Sioux Falls.
BACK IN THE DANCE
- Quinnipiac is back in the NCAA Tournament for the seventh consecutive season, drawing the Sioux Falls Regional and a date with Hockey East regular season champions Providence at 5 PM Eastern on Thursday.
- The Bobcats have advanced in four of those tournaments, including the 2023 National Championship. They advanced to the Regional Finals in 2019, 2022 and 2024.
- Overall, Quinnipiac has gone to 11 tournaments since 2013, finishing as the national runners-up twice and going 13-9 in those contests. Only Denver (28) has played more NCAA Tournament games in that span since the Bobcats (22).
RETURN TO THE FALLS
- Three Bobcats are making a return to Sioux Falls and their USHL homes with the Stampede, as 2023-24 players Chris Pelosi and Tyler Borgula, as well as 2024-25 standout Ethan Wyttenbach make their return to the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center.
- Pelosi and Borgula each totaled 50 points in the 2023-24 campaign, finishing in the top three on the team in scoring.
- Wyttenbach earned the inaugural Johnny Gaudreau Award during his tenure, finishing second on the team in points with 24 goals and 27 assists.
TOP 10 CERTIFIED
- Ethan Wyttenbach became the first Bobcat since 2023-24 to earn a spot on the Hobey Top 10 finalist list, the organization announced last Wednesday afternoon.
- Wyttenbach set a new first-year program record and currently leads the nation with 58 points and is two away from the first 60-point season in Quinnipiac's Division I history.
- The fifth-round pick of the Calgary Flames is the tenth overall Bobcat to be selected to the list and the ninth since the 2019 campaign.
FIRST TIME IN A LONG TIME
- It is the eighth overall meeting between the Bobcats and the Friars, but the first since the 2013-14 campaign, another NCAA Tournament matchup that the Friars won 4-0.
- Providence has won four of the seven outings, with the teams splitting the last five by a 2-2-1 record.
- It is the second straight year and the third time in the last five seasons Quinnipiac has opened with a Hockey East opponent. Last season, the Bobcats were knocked off by UConn but Quinnipiac bested Merrimack to start its 2023 National Championship run.
PLUSES AND MINUSES
- Sophomore Elliott Groenewold currently leads the nation in plus-minus, sitting at a plus-38 rating entering NCAA Tournament play. He is eight better than Luca Fantilli, Charlie Stramel and Colin Grable who currently sit at plus-30.
