HAMDEN, Conn. – The No. 12/13 Quinnipiac men's ice hockey team returns to Frank Perrotti Jr. Arena this weekend for the first home weekend of ECAC Hockey play against the Rensselaer Engineers Friday night before hosting the No. 12/13 Union Dutchmen Saturday night in a nationally ranked showdown.
Last Time Out
Quinnipiac opened ECAC Hockey play with a solid 5-3 win over Harvard to extend the winning streak to six games to open the season before the Bobcats fell for the first time this season at Dartmouth in a 5-1 loss. Despite the loss, the Bobcats were not affected in the national polls for the week.
Scouting Rensselaer
The Engineers are much improved this season, sporting a record of 3-4-1 and 3-1-0 in ECAC Hockey play. Rensselaer has won three of its last four games since opening league play, including a weekend sweep of Union back on Oct. 26-27. Last weekend, the Engineers fell to Clarkson before taking down St. Lawrence for their third league win, putting them within a win of last year's league total. Forward Jacob Hayhurst has distributed the puck well so far in 2018-19, leading ECAC Hockey with 10 assists and 11 points. Four different Engineers have recorded two goals this season and 11 different players have found the back of the net. Linden Marshall has seen the bulk of the action between the pipes, going 3-4 with a 3.47 GAA and .893 save percentage in seven starts.
All-Time vs. Rensselaer
Quinnipiac owns the all-time series with Rensselaer, 15-7-9, dating back to their first meeting in 1999. The two teams split last season's series as each home team won its respective home game. That series split followed a 12-game unbeaten streak for the Bobcats against the Engineers.
Scouting Union
The Dutchmen come into the weekend ranked No. 12 in the USCHO.com Division I Men's Poll and No. 13 in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine College Hockey Poll, becoming the second nationally ranked opponent to visit Hamden this season after Boston College came on Oct. 19. Union is coming off a weekend sweep of St. Lawrence and Clarkson this past weekend, their first full home weekend in ECAC Hockey play. After opening the season with a 4-0-1 mark, including a sweep of Northeastern, Union was swept by Rensselaer to open ECAC Hockey play. Cole Maier is tied for the league-lead with 11 points on the season, netting four goals and adding seven assists. Three different players have scored four goals on the season through nine games and 15 different players have found the back of the net. Jake Kupsky has started six of nine games to open the season, going 4-1-1 with a 2.48 GAA and .893 save percentage.
All-Time vs. Union
The Bobcats hold a slight edge in the all-time series between the two teams, going 18-16-4 in 38 all-time meetings. Last season, Union swept Quinnipiac in their weekend series. The Bobcats fell, 4-1, on the road in November at Messa Rink before falling in the February rematch in Hamden, 5-2. Quinnipiac's last win against Union came on Jan. 7, 2016, a 5-0 shutout, in Hamden.
National Recognition
The Bobcats continued to climb up the national rankings this weekend despite falling for the first time, moving up to No. 13 in the USCHO.com Division I Men's Poll while remaining at No. 12 in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Men's College Hockey Poll. The Bobcats also gained six more points in vote in the USCHO Poll, moving up to 333. Seeking 500 Wins
Rand Pecknold continued in his journey for his 500th career victory after beating Harvard on Friday night, moving up to 491 career wins. He looks to become just the second coach in Quinnipiac Athletics history to record 500 wins at Quinnipiac, as former men's and women's tennis coach Mike Quitko recorded 526 wins over 23 years with those programs. Former baseball coach Dan "Skip" Gooley recorded his 500th career win as a coach at Quinnipiac, but recorded 101 wins in a brief stint at Hartford before returning to Quinnipiac.
