HAMDEN, Conn. - The Quinnipiac volleyball team concludes its 2017 regular season with home matches against Canisius on Saturday and Niagara on Sunday, in control of its own destiny for a MAAC Tournament berth. A win over Canisius on Saturday, when the Bobcats will honor Elizabeth Kloos (Munster, Ind.) and Jamie Termotto (Smithtown, N.Y.) for Senior Day, would likely be enough to clinch, while a loss would still keep the Bobcats alive if they defeated Niagara on Sunday and got some help.
• The Bobcats celebrate Senior Day this weekend for the two seniors on the squad, outside hitter Jamie Termotto and middle hitter Elizabeth Kloos. The duo is tied with the Class of 2003 as the winningest class as full Division I members at Quinnipiac, including last year's record-setting 21-win campaign.
• Quinnipiac enters the final weekend of the regular season in a tight four-way battle for the final three MAAC Tournament bids. The Bobcats would likely qualify with a win over Canisius on Saturday, which would give the Bobcats a one-game lead over the Griffins with the tiebreaker advantage (although a three-way tie with Canisius and Iona at 9-9 could leave the Bobcats as the odd team out, which would require Canisius to upset unbeaten Fairfield, Quinnipiac to drop its home match to Niagara, and Iona to lose to both Marist and Siena).
• Quinnipiac could still get in with a loss to Canisius in five sets if it bounces back to defeat Niagara and Canisius falls to Fairfield. The tiebreaker with Canisius would then likely come down to points won head-to-head.
• The first time Quinnipiac and Canisius met in Buffalo, the Bobcats came away with a thrilling 3-2 win, including 20-18 in the fifth set. Sophomore outside hitter Natalie Alechko had a monster performance with a career-high 25 kills (one shy of the school record), including nine kills (and an ace) to account for half of the Bobcat points in the decisive fifth set.
• Niagara took a 3-0 win over the Bobcats in the first meeting on Sept. 30. Quinnipiac has beaten the Purple Eagles only one time in the series history, but it was a big one - a 3-2 win in the opening round of the MAAC Tournament last season (16-14 in the fifth set) with Alechko getting the winning kill out of the back row.
• Quinnipiac is coming off a huge two-game road sweep of Rider and Saint Peter's, including a 3-2 comeback win over Rider on Saturday. Sophomore Kaleigh Oates had a career-high 17 kills to lead the Bobcats to the victory which put them back in the MAAC Tournament hunt.
• Sophomore setter Maria Pansari became only the third Quinnipiac setter to reach 2,000 career assists against Marist on Oct. 16 She enters this weekend with 2,207 assists in less than two full seasons, on an early pace to break the school mark of 4.519 set by Jen McClain ('99).
• The Bobcats have been without both of their co-captains, senior Elizabeth Kloos and junior Jen Coffey, since September due to injury. Kloos ranks fourth all-time in Quinnipiac history at the Division I level with 771 career kills, while Coffey ranks fifth with 757. Both could be able to return soon, especially if the Bobcats were able to make the conference tournament.
