QU Claws Back to Defeat Canisius in Five Sets

Buffalo, N.Y. – The Quinnipiac women's volleyball team dropped the first two sets before roaring all the way back to down the Canisius Golden Griffins in five sets on Saturday afternoon in Buffalo.
Canisius jumped out to a quick start as the Golden Griffins led 8-2 as the Bobcats called an early timeout. The Bobcats responded with a 14-9 run to cut their deficit to just one as Canisius called a timeout of their own. Out of the timeout, both sides traded points as Canisius called their final timeout of the set with a 24-23 lead. The Golden Griffins scored the final point of the set out of the timeout to win the first set.
The Golden Griffins held the lead at the second set media timeout, 15-13. Out of the timeout, the two teams traded points, and Canisius called a timeout with a 20-18 lead. After their timeout, the Golden Griffins closed out the set with a 5-1 run to win the second set, 25-19.
The third set saw the Bobcats jump out to an early lead as they led 8-2 as Canisius called their first timeout of the set. The Bobcats came out of the break with a 4-1 run to push their lead to 12-3 as the Golden Griffins called their final timeout of the set. The Golden Griffins would cut into their deficit, but the Bobcats extended the match with a 25-17 win in the third set.
Quinnipiac came out in the fourth set and took a 15-12 lead at the fourth set media timeout. The Bobcats and Golden Griffins traded points out of the break as Canisius called a timeout with the Bobcats leading 17-14. A 6-5 run from the Bobcats forced Canisius to use their final timeout of the set as Quinnipiac was looking to extend the match. Out of the timeout, the Bobcats scored two of the next three points to win the fourth set, 25-20.
In the fifth and final set, the Golden Griffins took the lead 7-6 to force the Bobcats to call a timeout to settle things down. Out of the break, the Bobcats flipped the script and went on a 7-5 run to take a 13-12 lead in the final set. After Canisius called their first timeout of the set, QU went up 14-13 as the Golden Griffins used their last timeout. A kill from Vittoria Tonelli sealed the come-from-behind win for the Bobcats as they won their 13th straight match.

- Elena Giacomini led the Bobcats with 24 kills in the five-set win over the Golden Griffins. Giacomini ended the regular season with 10+ kills in 28 of 30 matches.
- Giacomini recorded 12 digs in the win for her 18th double-double of the season and 37th of her Quinnipiac career.
- Leilani-kai Giusta was second on the team with 18 kills in the five-set win, tied for the most she has recorded in a single match this season (9/26 at Sacred Heart).
- Giusta recorded her fifth double-double of the season as she registered 16 digs in the win.
- Damla Gunes led the Bobcats with 46 assists, while seven other Bobcats recorded at least one assist in the win. Carola Negron Diaz and Klara Olszewska each recorded four assists in the win.
- Gunes also recorded 17 digs as she recorded her 14th double-double of the season.
- Gunes has recorded 1,281 assists this season, which gives her 4,184 in her career.
- Carola Negron Diaz led the Bobcats with 19 digs in the win over Canisius.
- Eight different Bobcats recorded at least one kill in the match.
- Nine different Bobcats registered at least one dig in the match, while four Bobcats recorded 10+ digs.
- Milena Silva led the Bobcats with 4.5 total blocks in the win.
- The Bobcats stretched their win streak to thirteen straight matches.
- With the win, the Bobcats ended the regular season with a 16-2 record in conference play and 19-11 overall.
- With the result, the Bobcats secured the #2 seed for the 2025 MAAC Volleyball Championships.
- Their two conference losses are the fewest in a single conference schedule in program history.
