
Quinnipiac Men's Ice Hockey Falls To UMass, 6-3

AMHERST, Massachusetts – Quinnipiac men's ice hockey lost to the University of Massachusetts, 6-3, in a non-conference matchup at the Mullins Center in Amherst, Mass. With the loss, Quinnipiac drops to 5-7-1 overall while UMass improves to 7-6-0.
Logan Mick (Armstrong, British Columbia) scored his first career goal in the loss, while Alex Whelan (Ramsey, New Jersey) scored his fifth of the season. Brandon Fortunato (North Hills, New York) also scored on the power play, for his first points with the Bobcats after transferring to Quinnipiac last season.

- 5:50, 1st (UMass 1, Quinnipiac 0): Cale Makar carried the puck deep into the Quinnipiac zone before feeding Niko Rufo just below the blue line. Rufo wristed on a shot on the Quinnipiac goal, through a screen in front of Bobcats' goalie Keith Petruzzelli, to give the Minutemen a 1-0 lead.
- 6:54, 1st (UMass 2, Quinnipiac 0): Just over a minute later, Makar broke up a pass in the Minutemen defensive zone and tipped the puck over to Jake Gaudet. Gaudet then sent it to Oliver Chau in the neutral zone, who took off down-ice on a breakaway before beating Petruzzelli with a backhand to give UMass a two-goal lead.
- 16:35, 1st (UMass 2, Quinnipiac 1): Late in the first period, Matt Forchuk (Okotoks, Alberta) won a face-off in the UMass zone back to Luke Shiplo (Oakville, Ontario) along the wall. Shiplo fired a shot on goal that was tipped by Logan Mick to cut the UMass lead in half, 2-1.
- 0:51, 2nd (UMass 3, Quinnipiac 1): Mitchell Chaffee scored on a clapper from the slot to give UMass a two-goal lead less than a minute into the second frame.
- 12:41, 2nd (UMass 4, Quinnipiac 1): Rufo picked up his second goal of the night after a turnover in the Bobcats' defensive zone turned into a two-on-one the other way that resulted in Jack Suter saucing a pass across the slot to Rufo for the one-timer from the doorstep.
- 4:28, 3rd (UMass 5, Quinnipiac 1): Chau scored his second of the game, this one coming on the power play, with assists to Chaffee and Gaudet.
- 7:34, 3rd (UMass 5, Quinnipiac 2): Alex Whelan scored his fifth of the season, and first in eight games, to cut UMass' lead to three. Karlis Cukste (Riga, Latvia) broke up a UMass rush before Nick Jermain (Norwalk, Connecticut) sent it up the boards where Whelan picked it up in the neutral zone. Whelan carried in into the UMass defensive zone, stepped around a defensemen and then picked the top right corner for the Bobcats' second goal of the night.
- 16:21, 3rd (UMass 5, Quinnipiac 3): On the power play, Quinnipiac chose to pull Petruzzelli for the extra-attacker. Bo Pieper won a draw in front of the UMass goal back to Craig Martin, who handed the puck to Brandon Fortunato for the one-timer from the point to pull the Bobcats within two goals late in the game.
- 18:20, 3rd (UMass 6, Quinnipiac 3): Rufo scored his third of the game, unassisted, on an empty net to push UMass' lead back to three goals with less than two minutes to play.
- Logan Mick's goal with less than four minutes to go in the first period was the first of his career.
- Shiplo's assists on Mick's goal was his third of the season, while Forchuk picked up his second helper of the year.
- Whelan's goal tied him with Chase Priskie and Landon Smith for a team-high five goals, each.
- The goal was Whelan's first goal since his game-winner against Northeastern on Oct. 21.
- Cukste's fourth assist of the season ties him with John Furgele (Glen Mills, Pennsylvania) and Priskie for the most assists among Quinnipiac defenseman.
- Jermain's assist was his fourth of the season.
- Fortunato's goal was his first point of his Quinnipiac career, and the seventh of his career.
