WORCESTER, Mass. – Quinnipiac men's soccer fell to Holy Cross, 2-1, in a non-conference matchup on Saturday night in Worcester. The Bobcats fall to 3-4 on the season with the loss, while Holy Cross improves to 4-2 with the win.
Quinnipiac captain James Doig (Liverpool, England) netted Quinnipiac's lone goal in the 38th minute, tying the game 1-1. Doig blasted a shot from 30 yards out that went past the right side of Holy Cross goalkeeper Henry Stutz, giving Doig his third career goal. Conor McCoy (Newry, Northern Ireland) and Jeppe Haehre (Baerums Verk, Norway) were each credited with an assist – the first of both of their collegiate careers.
Holy Cross opened the scoring, as Matt Villano found the back of the net in the midst of a crowded box to give the Crusaders a 1-0 lead in the 36th minute. Doig's goal came two minutes later, though, knotting things back up.
The Bobcats, trying to break the tie, had three good scoring chances in the final 25 minutes. The first opportunity came with 23:51 left, when Rashawn Dally (Bloomfield, Connecticut) tried to bend the ball into the far corner from the top of the box. His shot went just high of the net, keeping things tied 1-1.
Doig was almost involved in another scoring play for the Bobcats in the 79th minute, putting a free kick right in front of the Holy Cross net. Stutz was quick off his line, though, scrambling to make the save before any Quinnipiac player could get a foot on the ball.
Dally had another chance to break the tie in the 85th minute, perfectly crossing the ball to the far side of the Holy Cross net. Matthew Taylor (Dublin, Ireland), uncovered, was able to strike the ball toward net with his head, but Stutz was there once again to make the stop.
Junior Nicholas Cestaro had a chance to break the tie with 2:13 left, firing a shot toward net from the top of the box. Quinnipiac goalkeeper Chrysostomos Iakovidis (Thessaloniki, Greece) made a diving, full extension save, though, giving the Bobcats another chance. Iakovidis had five saves in the loss.
Holy Cross netted the game-winner with 1:39 remaining, coming off Arno Rupp's penalty kick. The Crusaders shot toward an open net in the final two minutes of action, forcing Doig to block the ball with his hand which resulted in a penalty. Rupp took the ensuing corner, blasting it to the left side of the net. Iakovidis, sliding in the other direction, fully extended to try and stop the shot with his leg – but deflected the shot into the back of the net.
Quinnipiac travels to St. John's University on Tuesday, with kickoff set for 7 p.m. from Queens, New York. The Bobcats then return home to host Niagara on Sept. 25 for its first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game of the 2016 season.
