QU Women's Ice Hockey's Cianfarano, Rossman and Tamberg Collect Major Awards, Six Named to All-League Teams

HAMDEN, Connecticut – Quinnipiac women's ice hockey forward Taylar Cianfarano (Oswego, New York) was named the ECAC Hockey Player of the Year and Forward of the Year, Sydney Rossman (Excelsior, Minnesota) was named the ECAC Hockey Goaltender of the Year and Kristen Tamberg (North Toronto, Ontario) was named the Mandi Schwartz Student-Athlete of the Year at the annual ECAC Hockey Awards Banquet, hosted by Quinnipiac University on Friday, March 4, 2016.
Cianfarano and Rossman were also both named to the ECAC Hockey First Team, Tamberg was named to the All-ECAC Hockey Second Team, both Emma Woods (Burford, Ontario) and Nicole Kosta (Mississauga, Ontario) were named to the All-ECAC Third Team and Melissa Samoskevich (Sandy Hook, Connecticut) was named to the ECAC Hockey All-Rookie Team.
In addition, Samoskevich was named a finalist for the league's Rookie of the Year Award and head coach Cassandra Turner was a finalist for the Coach of the Year Award.
Tamberg became the second player in program history to win the Mandi Schwartz Student-Athlete of the Year Award, joining Chelsea Laden who won the award last year. This award is the top award given out by ECAC Hockey, honoring former Yale women's ice hockey player Mandi Schwarz, who lost her battle with cancer in 2011. She was a standout player and student in the classroom, as emphasized by the award.
On the ice, Tamberg is in the midst of the best season in her career as she record three goals, 12 assists and 15 points in league play this season, ranking in the top four in all four categories. All three of her goals came on the power play, god for the fifth most power-play goals in the league. Overall, Tamberg has tallied 21 points this season, the first Quinnipiac defenseman since Regan Boulton in 2012-13 to net 20 points. Tamberg's four goals (all power play), 17 assists and 21 points are all career-highs while her 50 blocked shots are two shy of her career-high.
Off the ice, Tamberg has excelled in the classroom where she has posted a 3.92 GPA while studying in the biomedical sciences program. Tamberg is a three-time all-academic team selection, was named to the Commissioner's List last season and is in the midst of applying to Dentistry School.
Cianfarano is Quinnipiac's second ever player to win the ECAC Hockey Player of the Year Award, joining Kelly Babstock who won the award during the 2010-11 season. Cianfarano is in the midst of a fantastic sophomore season in which she led ECAC Hockey in conference games with 17 goals, 0.81 goals per game, a +45 plus-minus rating and two hat tricks. Cianfarano was also second in the conference with 27 points and 1.29 points per game. After tallying a hat trick in the Bobcats North Country road trip at Clarkson and two more at St. Lawrence, Cianfarano upped the ante with four goals and one assists four five-point against Union. She was just the second Quinnipiac women's hockey player in program history to record four goals in one game and third to tally five points.
Cianfarano finished the regular season with 27 goals and 21 assists for 48 points, netting the third most goals in a season in program history and fourth most points. With two assists in the Bobcats ECAC Hockey quarterfinal opening win against Rensselaer, Cianfarano has 50 points this season, just the third ever Bobcat to record 50 points in a single season in program history.
Rossman is the second Bobcat to ever win the league's Goaltender of the Year Award after Victoria Vigilanti won the award during her freshman season in 2009-10. Rossman has had one of the best seasons in ECAC Hockey history as she recorded 11 shutouts this season, the second most shutouts every in league history behind Ali Brewer's 13 in 1998-99. Rossman led ECAC Hockey with 16 wins, a 0.80 GAA, .956 save percentage, 11 shutouts and 1343:22 minutes played. In league play, Rossman's GAA and save percentage are the fifth best in ECAC Hockey history.
Throughout the course of the season, Rossman recorded shutouts against nine of the 11 other teams in the league. She also became the first goaltender to ever shutout Clarkson and St. Lawrence on the North Country road trip.
Overall this season, Rossman set numerous program records this season. Her 28 wins, 26 of which came in the regular season, are the most in program history. Rossman also set the program record for consecutive shutouts at four and shutout streak at 296:42.
Kosta's ECAC Hockey Third Team selection was the third of her career, capping off an incredible career in a Quinnipiac uniform. This season, she was third in league play with 0.73 assists per game while ranking seventh with 13 assists and 14th with 0.89 points per game. Joining Cianfarano, Kosta was one of three players to record a four-point game this season. On the other side of the ice, she was one of the top defensive forwards in the league. Overall, Kosta has 10 goals and 15 assists for 25 points, her fourth season of 25 or more points in her career.
Woods was named to an all-league team with her third team selection after a breakout junior season. She was tied for second in the league with 17 assists, 0.77 assists per game, a +22 rating, and five power-play assists. Woods also ranked third in the league with 23 points and 1.05 points per game. She tallied six multiple-point games in league play, including two three-point games. Overall, Woods has 11 goals and 23 assists for 34 points, setting career-highs in assists and points.
Samoskevich has had a tremendous freshman season for the Bobcats as she leads all league skaters with seven game-winning goals in conference play and her eight game-winners overall are the best in the country. Among rookies, Samoskevich's 12 goals and 19 points were second in the league and was tied among league rookies with three power-play goals and five power-play points. Overall this season, Samoskevich has tallied 16 goals and 16 assists for 32 points, the third most by a freshman in Quinnipiac women's ice hockey history. This season, Samoskevich was named the ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Week four times and ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Month in October.
The No. 1 seed Quinnipiac women's ice hockey team will open up semifinal play on Saturday, March 5 when they take on the No. 6 seed St. Lawrence at High Point Solutions Arena at 1 PM No. 2 seed Clarkson and No. 4 seed Colgate will face off at 4 PM followed by the championship game at 2 PM on Sunday, March 5.
